January 2022 marks as the second month of winter. Climatologically, it is also the
coldest month of the year, according to the monthly climate information recently
shared by Qatar Meteorology Department (QMD)."Cold fronts are common
during this month with frequent low pressure systems usually accompanied with
thunderstorms," stated in the report. The second week of this month will also
likely bring rain along with frequent fog cases especially in the first half of January
2022. On its weather update for today, QMD stated that weather conditions are
partly cloudy at times with a chance of scattered rain that may turn thundery at
times. The wind will also blow in the southeasterly to southwesterly direction at
moderate to fresh and strong at times. QMD also reminded citizens and residents
of the marine warning during this weather condition. The mean daily temperature
for this month 17.7 degrees Celsius. The lowest and highest temperature
recorded in January is 3.8 degrees Celsius (1964) while the highest is 32.4 degrees
Celsius (2015).
India launches drive to vaccinate children before a feared Omicron
surge
India started vaccinating children aged 15 to 18 against the coronavirus on
Monday as it quickly expands its inoculation effort to cover the world's largest
adolescent population amid fears the Omicron variant will drive a new surge of
infections. Authorities on Monday reported 33,750 new COVID-19 cases and 123
deaths. The total number of cases of the fast-spreading Omicron variant detected
in India was 1,700, the health ministry said. Private and public schools will double
up as vaccination centers for children and school authorities have been ordered
to report their daily vaccination data to state authorities. "Children are going to
be given vaccines in their schools. They can also go to vaccination centers and get
the dose ... they can just walk in," said Jai Prakash Shivahare, health commissioner
in Gujarat state. Thousands of children, many accompanied by parents, queued
up outside schools, medical centers and special health camps from early on
Monday to secure their first dose of a vaccine. The government is only giving
children Bharat Biotech's Covaxin vaccine as that is the only vaccine with
emergency use listing for the 15-18 age group, the health ministry said last week.

South African police charge man with arson over damaging blaze at
parliament
Cape Town: South African police said on Monday they had charged a man with
arson over a fire that caused extensive damage to the national parliament
building in Cape Town, as firefighters struggled to extinguish the last remains of
the blaze. The fire broke out early on Sunday at the parliamentary complex, some
of which dates back to 1884 and includes the National Assembly, or lower House
of Parliament. It caused the collapse of the roof of a part of the complex housing
the upper chamber, or National Council of Provinces (NCOP), on Sunday and
gutted an entire floor, though there were no reports of anybody being hurt in the
incident. A 49-year-old suspect arrested in connection with the blaze is expected
to appear in court on Tuesday and will face charges of housebreaking and theft as
well as arson, an elite police unit known as the Hawks said in a statement. The
National Assembly is situated in what is known as the New Wing, which suffered
the worst damage in the blaze. The fire was more quickly contained on Sunday in
the Old Wing, parliamentary authorities said.
