KILLSLASH is the worst movie

I have ever seen.


It's blood and gore churned
out for morons. The premise is
the kind of idea that any self-
respecting B-movie producer
would have discarded, but for
some reason these producers ran
with it and even managed to
finance the damn thing.
Its depraved vulgarity throws
away any ounce of credibility
the cast and director could have
brought to the table. And to
think that some sick, twisted,
screenwriter was capable of
dreaming up such schlock!
As the credits roll up the
screen, you'd be forgiven for
wondering why you even sat
through such rubbish.

overview

You put on your mask, pick up your weapon, and head to your killing ground.

You are the legendary killer in a slasher movie - the true hero of the story.  Your next
four victims are unaware that you're silently watching their every move, waiting for
them to make the same mistakes that horror-movie victims always make.

You have a penchant for killing, but because deaths are so fleeting you write them
down in your journal so you can reminisce about them later. Ah, nostalgia...

you will need

A six-sided die - (1D6)

Journaling tools - e.g. Pen and paper, a note-taking app, or a computer.

about the game

Killslash is a solo journaling game where you are the killer in a slasher movie. As
you hunt and attack four people you write about your experience and learn more
about yourself and your victims.

During the game you will choose your victims, answer questions about them, roll
dice to attack them, and then roll dice to see how they react. You'll then describe
what happens in as much detail as you'd like.

Will you become a slasher icon or will your victims outsmart you?

set up

choose your weapon

Every slasher killer has a signature weapon (Michael Myers has his kitchen knife,
Freddy Krueger has his gloves, and Leatherface has his chainsaw) so it’s only right
that you choose your own signature weapon.
 
You can choose any kind of weapon that you would like.
 
There are three weapon sizes to choose from, which also act as the game’s difficulty
setting. Each weapon size will affect the length of the game.

Big Weapon e.g. Sword, Axe, Chainsaw etc.


(Easy Mode, Short Game)  
 
Medium Weapon e.g. Machete, Hammer, Baseball Bat etc.
(Standard Mode, Average Game)  
 
Small Weapon e.g. Screwdriver, Kitchen Knife,
(Hard Mode, Long Game) Your Bare Hands etc.

Each Weapon Size has a different Attack Roll modifier:

WEAPON SIZE attack ROLL

BIG 1D6 + 1

MEDIUM 1D6

SMALL 1D6 - 1

Example: Your weapon of choice is an Axe, which is a Big Weapon. You make an Attack Roll
and roll a 4. You’ll then add 1, to make it a 5, and look up the corresponding result on the
Attack Roll Chart (p.6).

Choose your Location

Every slasher killer has their favourite haunt (Jason's is Camp Crystal Lake, Freddy
Krueger’s is his victim’s dreams, and Victor Crowley’s is the bayou).

Where do you choose to hunt your victims?


 
You can choose anywhere you would like. Try to make it somewhere you can attack
your victim’s one at a time without any of the others knowing. Somewhere like a
summer camp, a hotel, or even a town would be perfect.

Answer the following questions about your location:

What’s its name? Does it have a nickname?


(e.g. Camp Crystal Lake is known as Camp Blood)

What is the first thing people notice about the place?


(Is it creepy? Does it have a specific smell? Is it easy to get lost?)

Is this place significant to you? If so, why?


(Did you go there as a child? Did you lose someone you love there?
Were you bullied there?)

Is there a local legend about the place? If so, what is it?


(Is it haunted? Was it home to an infamous murder? Is it built
upon an ancient burial ground?)

Choose your victims

Choose four characters you’d like to play against out of eight slasher-movie
archetypes. Give each character a name on the Playsheet.

Each character has a brief description of their character traits, which you can use as a
guide to flesh out each character as you play.

During each round of the game you will be asked to answer a Victim Question.

Choose four Victims to play against out of:

1 The Final Girl

A strong, kind-hearted girl. You can only attack


her when all of the other victims are dead.
 
2 The Cheerleader

A naive, promiscuous girl.


 
3 The Jock

A strong, dumb guy.


 
4 The Officer

A competent cop, who doesn’t believe the teenagers.


 
5 The Stoner

A fun-loving, spontaneous teen.


 
6 The Best Friend

A courageous, selfless teen.


 
7 The Nerd

A smart, fast but weak teen.


 
8 The Meta-ist

A witty, knowledgeable teen who is completely


aware that they’re a character in a slasher-movie.

how to play

journaling

Over the course of the game you will roll dice to reveal writing prompts, as well as
answer questions about the killer, victims, and location.

During the game you may write as much or as little as you would like. You can just
write a few notes here and there or you could use the prompts in this game as the
basis for writing a full story or screenplay. It's entirely up to you. 

The joy of this game comes from describing the creative ways that your killer kills
their victims, and how they react.

So start thinking like a schlocky, horror screenwriter!

gameplay

The game takes place over a series of scenes with your victims.
 
The order of a scene is as follows:

1 Choose a Victim to attack.

2 Answer a Victim Question.

3 Describe how and where you find the Victim.

4 Make an Attack Roll. Describe what happens.

5 If the Victim is still alive, make a Victim Roll.

6 Answer a Killer Question.

attack roll

When you choose a Victim to attack you will then make an Attack Roll by rolling a
1D6 (+/- your weapon's modifier). Compare your result to the chart below to find out
how much damage you cause them.

Describe what happens in as much gory detail as you can muster.

Some results cause the Victim to lose health. Fill in the amount of health lost on the
Playsheet. If a prompt would cause the Victim to lose their remaining health they
die. You can then kill them in any way you'd like. The more imaginative the better!

1 You accidentally alert them to your presence.


(What did you do?) Skip to their Victim Roll.

2 You draw blood.


(e.g. a gash, or a ripped shirt.) They lose 1 health.

3 You hurt them.


(e.g. a stab wound, or torn flesh.) They lose 2 health.

4 You break them.


(e.g. a broken bone, or a severed hand or foot.)
They lose 3 health.

5 You destroy them.


(e.g. a severed arm or leg.) They lose 3 health.

6 You kill them.


They lose their remaining health.

At any time during the game, you may choose to lose


one health point to increase or decrease any die roll by 1.

If the Victim is still alive after you have made an Attack Roll you will then make a
Victim Roll to see how the Victim responds.

Describe what happens.


 
Some results cause you to lose health. Fill in the amount of health lost on
the Playsheet.

1-2 They escape.


(How do they get away? Do you let them go or did they
slip through your fingers?)

3 They try to attack you but you hurt them instead.


They lose 1 health.

4-5 They attack you.


(e.g. they cut you, or hit you) You lose 1 health.

6 They make you bleed.


(e.g. they stab you, or sever a hand)  
You lose 2 health.

The End Of The Game

The end of the game is triggered when you have either successfully killed every
Victim or you lose your final health point.
 
If you kill every Victim you win the game!
 
If you lose all 6 of your health points you’ll come Back From The Dead and have one
final attempt to kill each remaining Victim.

Back From The Dead

Once you lose all 6 health points you are dead. Or so everybody thinks. As anyone
will tell you, in slasher movies the killer doesn’t stay dead for long, do they?
 
You now come back with superhuman strength and have one final attempt at killing
each of the remaining victims. Add +1 to all Attack Rolls (You add this to your existing
modifier e.g. You'll add +2 for Big Weapons and +1 for Medium Weapons etc.)

Because you’ve come back with super human abilities, none of the victims can
make a Victim Roll. If you don’t kill them, they escape for good. The only exception
is the Final Girl. If the Final Girl is still in play, they make a Victim Roll as usual. If
they successfully attack you, you die.
 
If any Victims are alive after your final attempt to kill them, you lose the game.

how well did you do?

How will you go down in history? Count up how many victims you successfully killed
to find out how impressive your killing spree was.

4 excellent You’ll go down in history as one of


the scariest killers of all time.

3 great You left someone for you to track


down in the sequel.

2 good The two survivors will tell tales


and legends about you.

1 poor You only killed one person. It’s


horrific but not good enough for
you to be a serial killer.

killer questions

At  the end of each scene you will answer a Killer Question. Choose whichever
question from this list you want to answer.

They don't have to be answered in order and you might not answer all of them.

The people you are trying to kill don’t know your real name.
What nickname do they give you?
(Why did they choose it? Is it related to your weapon?)

What is it about your appearance that scares people?


(Do you have a horrifying scar? Do you have an iconic outfit?)

Do you wear a mask?


(If so, describe it. If not, why not?)

Why are you trying to kill these people?


(Did they hurt you? Are you out for revenge?)

How did you acquire you signature weapon?


(Is there a story behind it? Why do you like to use it?)

There is something that scares you about the people you are
trying to kill. What is it?

How do you see your victims?


(As people who have wronged you? As people who need to be taught a
lesson? Something else?)

One of the people you are trying to kill reminds you of


someone you used to know. Who is it and why?

victim questions

At the beginning of each encounter you will answer a Victim Question. Each Victim
has their own set of questions. Choose one of their questions to answer. They don't
have to be answered in order and you might not answer all of them.

If a question makes reference to another Victim, you can answer the question as
though it happened earlier. (e.g. If the other Victim is now dead.)

A strong, kind-hearted girl.

She does something that surprises you. What is it?

You saw her do something to help another victim. What did


she do and who did she help?

She makes her own weapon. What does she make and how
does she make it?

Which of the other Victims was she closest to? Why?

The Cheerleader
A naive, promiscuous girl.

She leads someone away in secret to make out with them.


Who? Where does she take them?

She wanders off by herself and something startles her. Why


and where does she go? What scares her?

She warns you that if you hurt her you’ll have her daddy to
answer to. Who is her daddy, and what does he do?

She’s hiding a secret. What is it?

The Jock
A strong, dumb guy.

He does something to show off to someone else. What does


he do? Who is he trying to impress?
 
He makes fun of a member of the group. Who does he make
fun of and why?
 
He accidentally hurts himself. Why? What did he do?
 
He’s presented with two options and makes the wrong
choice. What were the options and why was his choice the
wrong one?

The Officer
A competent cop, who doesn’t
believe the teenagers.

A victim tries to tell them what is happening but the officer


doesn’t believe them. Why not? What do they say?

They hear a noise or see something suspicious and go off


alone to investigate it. What do they hear/see?
 
They get a call about a different crime happening
elsewhere. What is it? Why do they stay?
 
They’ve arrested one of the victims before. Who was it and
why did they arrest them?

The Stoner
A fun-loving, spontaneous teen.

They sneak off to smoke weed and see something that


scares them. Where do they go? What scares them?
 
They suspect that the killer is someone in their group. Who
do they think it is? Why? Do they tell anyone?
 
They try to hide from you but make a noise that alerts you
to their location. What was the noise? Where are they?
 
They try to phone for help but can’t. Why not?

The Best Friend


A courageous, selfless teen.

Who do they consider is their best friend in the group? How


long have they known each other?
 
They get into an argument with someone and wander off
alone. What was the argument about? Where do they go to?
 
They find themselves in a dark, claustrophobic location.
Where are they? How did they get there?
 
They find some strange writing. Where is it? What does it
say? Is it a warning? Will it help them?

The nerd
A smart, fast and weak teen.

They create a makeshift weapon out of things they find.


What do they make?
 
They find a warning that someone has left. What is the
warning? How do they react?
 
They try to outrun you but can’t. What happens?
 
Something suddenly scares them. What is it? How do they
react to it?

The Meta-ist
A witty, knowledgeable teen who’s
aware they’re in a slasher movie.

They know that they are merely a character in a slasher


movie and try to warn the others. What do they say? Do
their friends believe them?
 
They stumble upon the body of one of your victims and
know they’re about to be attacked next. Who do they find?
What do they do to prepare for the attack?
 
They successfully guess something about your backstory.
What do they guess?
 
They accuse you of imitating a killer from a movie. Which
movie are they talking about? How do you react?

1 Choose a Victim to attack


I choose to attack The Stoner.

2 Answer a Victim Question


'They try to phone for help but can’t. Why not?'

The Stoner finds the telephone in the abandoned office. He dials 911. As he does
he sees my silhouette through the frosted-glass window. He ducks beneath the
desk, thinking that I haven't seen him. He's right, I haven't seen him. But I can
smell him a mile off. I open the office door and walk in. He can't speak to the
cops. He's too scared that I'll hear him.

3 Describe how and where you find the Victim.

I stop in front of the desk so he can see the blood on my boots. I crouch down and
lock eyes with him. He's frozen in place, just how I want him.

4 Make an Attack Roll and describe what happens.


I roll a 2. Because I'm using a machete, which is a Big Weapon, I add +1 to
my roll, which makes it a 3: 'You hurt them'. I fill in 2 of their health.

I slash at The Stoner with my machete. As I do, he jerks back. I miss the spot I was
aiming for but the blade still cuts through his shirt and slices his arm, sending a
pleasing spray of blood across my mask.

5 If the Victim is still alive, make a Victim Roll. Describe what happens.
I roll a 5: 'They attack you'. I fill in one of my health.

The Stoner jumps up and yanks the phone from the desk, ripping the phone cord
out of the wall. He hurls it at me. It slams into my head and for a second I start
seeing stars.

6 Answer a Killer Question.


Do you wear a mask? If so, describe it.

I wear the skin of a pig's face over my own. It's terrifying.
