Deep Blue

● Deep Blue was a supercomputer developed by IBM specifically for playing chess
● Famously, Deep Blue was the first artificial intelligence construct to ever win a chess match against a
reigning world chess champion under regular time controls
● Deep Blue had the capability to evaluate 200 million positions per second and relied upon rules and
variables determined by chess grandmasters and computer scientists
● Today’s chess engines like Leela Chess Zero, Stockfish 13, etc use supervised machine learning systems
that train a neural network to play, meaning the systems develop their own internal logic rather than
relying on the rules defined by human experts
● Deep Blue impacted computing in many different industries as it enabled researchers to explore and
understand the limits of massively parallel processing
