POTIONS
BY ARSENIUS JIGGER
A Treatise on Potions
Potions (Latin potio, 'beverage') are magical mixtures commonly brewed in cauldrons and used to
create various effects on the drinker. A wizard or witch who specializes in potion brewing is known as a
potioneer.
Potions are brewed from ingredients with magical properties. Potions can be used as medicine, lethal
poison, or give the drinker any effect from strength enhancement to immunity to flames. Potions are
not necessarily used by drinking, as some can be applied by physical contact or create an effect simply
by being created, such as the Regeneration Potion. One very important thing to remember about
potions is "A clean cauldron keeps potions from becoming poisons."
The science of potion making includes the use of words that are specific to this art.
A brew is a liquid mixture made by steeping, soaking, or boiling solid ingredients in water.
A concoction is, simply, a mixture of ingredients.
A draught or draft is one serving or portion of a potion. The word draft indicates the substance is drawn
from a cask rather than from a closed bottle.
An elixir is a sweetened, aromatic solution used as medicine.
A philtre is a potion designed to enchant or charm the drinker.
A poison is a potion intended to cause harm or death to the drinker.
A tincture is a benign medicine preserved in alcohol.
The Antidote to Common Poisons (or Antidote for Common Poisons) is a potion which counteracts
ordinary poisons, such as creature bites and stings. When brewed properly, it is a bluish-green color.
The Antidote to Uncommon Poisons is a potion that cures Doxy venom and other uncommon poisons.
When correctly brewed, it is slate grey in color.
The Cure for Boils (also known as simply Boil Cure) is a potion which cures boils. When brewed
correctly, the cure shall be a deep blue in color.
Forgetfulness Potion
The Forgetfulness Potion was a potion which caused an unknown degree of memory loss in the drinker.
The potion, when brewed properly, is a deep amber color.
Herbicide Potion
Herbicide Potion (or simply Herbicide) is a potion that kills or damages plants. It has a disgusting taste,
and is not for human consumption, as it may affect the drinker's health. It has a dark green color when
finished.
Sleeping Draught
The Sleeping Draught was a potion that caused the drinker to fall almost instantaneously into a deep
but temporary sleep. A standard Sleeping Draught differed from the Draught of Living Death, which
was much more powerful, lasting, and difficult to make. Sleeping Draught when properly brewed is a
bright purple in colour.
Swelling Solution
The Swelling Solution is a potion which causes whatever it touches to swell in size. When brewed,
swelling solution is a deep green color.
The Wideye Potion, also known as the Awakening Potion, was a potion which prevented the drinker
from falling asleep and could also be used to awaken someone from drugging or concussion. It acted as
an antidote for the Draught of Living Death. The potion when correctly brewed is a bright green color.
Wiggenweld Potion
The Wiggenweld Potion is a healing potion with the power to awaken a person from a magically-
induced sleep. When properly concocted, the potion has an acid green color.
A prince once used this potion to awaken a princess who had been given the Draught of Living Death
by the Hag Leticia Somnolens. The prince first put some of the potion on his lips and then kissed the
princess.
Hair-Raising Potion
The Hair-Raising Potion is a potion that causes the drinker's hair to stand on end. It is a relatively
simple potion to make, but requires quite a bit of patience. When brewed correctly, it should appear to
be a hazy green color.
Girding Potion
The Girding Potion is a Potion that gives the consumer extra endurance. It has a rather foul odor as well
as a golden hue when prepared. The maximum dosage is no more than two vials of the potion.
Shrinking Solution
Shrinking Solution is a potion that causes the drinker to decrease in size or apparent age. It is bright
green when brewed correctly and, if prepared incorrectly, it can apparently be poisonous.
Undetectable Poisons
Undetectable Poisons are a type of poison that are presumably undetectable by any method.
Unfortunately, since they are undetectable, there is little one can do to detect them, save for look for the
symptoms of the poison from the person who ingests it. A poison is any substance that can cause severe
distress or death if ingested, breathed in, or absorbed through the skin. There exists both an Antidote to
Common Poisons that can counteract the effect of many ordinary poisons, as well as an Antidote to
Uncommon Poisons that is helpful against many rarer ones. A bezoar is a stone taken from the stomach
of a goat that will reverse the effects of most poisons, though there are certain unusual ones that it won't
work against.
Chapter 15
Conclusion
Potions are a very delicate subject, and must be handled delicately. One missed step in their creation
can either create an undesired effect, or even poison a person. This book is simply an introduction to
potion-making for students of the craft. It should also serve as a warning to treat potions seriously, as
most instances of poisonings are because of incorrectly brewed potions. However, with a careful eye
and a steady hand, potions can save live and enhance oneself.
