The femoral artery originates from the external iliac artery and travels through the thigh before branching into the popliteal artery behind the knee. The popliteal artery then branches into the anterior and posterior tibial arteries which travel down the leg. The femoral vein drains blood from the leg and thigh and becomes the external iliac vein as it travels back to the heart.
