Relations
1. John is related to Bosco in our home
John is a brother to Bosco

2. Bududa is related to Uganda

4. 5 is related to 45
5 is a factor to 45

5. 3 is related to 12 and 15
3 is the LCM of 12 and 15

Activity (10 mins)


At your respective homes, look for the following objects.
{ Black shoes , toothbrush , a table ,remote control, stockings , toothpaste ,2 chairs }
a) Using your phone, take a photo and show us these objects.
b) Using the knowledge of relations, group the objects above in pairs.
c) Lastly take photos of pairs grouped and write against each photo the relationship that
exists between the two objects.
Conclusion
A relationship is a connection. This may be about things, people, numbers and so on.

Papygram
This is a diagrammatic representation of a mathematical relation for a given set of elements.
Example
1. Given the following related numbers, show the relation “is bigger than” on the Papygram.
{ 3 , 7 , 8 ,10 }

Note:
Show the relationship direction E.g 10 is greater than 3
2. Make a Papygram to illustrate the relation “is a factor of” for the set { 2 , 4 , 5 , 9 , 12, 15 , 18 }

Mappings:
This refers to the set relation between members of one set and members of another set

Activity (5 mins)
Think of possible relation between the first set and the second set in each of these cases
a) { Dodoma , Kampala, Kigali , Nairobi , Addis Abbaba } and
{ Rwanda , Uganda, Tanzania , Ethiopia , Kenya }
b) { Mt . Kenya , Mt . Kilimanjaro, Mt . Rwenzori } and { Kenya ,Tanzania , Uganda }
c) { H 2O , NaCl , Fe , Pb , Au } and { Water , Salt , Iron , Lead ,Gold }

Arrow diagrams
These are used to illustrate mappings e.g.

Domain and Range


The sets in a mapping are called domain and range.
The domain is the set of elements (objects) to be mapped.
The range is the set of elements (image) onto which the elements in domain are mapped

On a piece of paper, construct the Mapping diagram for the following Home based objects
Use small standard symbols to represent the objects
Domain { Phone , Chair , Bulb , Keys , Pencil , Plate ,Television }
Range { Spoon , Remote , Bulb Holder ,∼Card , Drawing Book , Padlock , Table }
Instructions:
i. Use arrows to complete the mapping diagram you have drawn establishing the
relationship between the objects in the first set and the second set.
ii. Take a photo of your answers and share.

Types of mappings
One to one:
Here, each number is mapped onto only one number.

One to many:
Here, some numbers are mapped onto more than one number
e.g

Many to one:
More than one number is mapped onto the same number.
E.g
Many to many:
Here, some numbers are mapped onto more than one number and more than one number is
mapped onto the same number.

Activity (15 mins)


In a joint survey that was carried out recently during the Lockdown on most families shows that
most commonly used items at homes include the Radios which are Electric powered, Cars which
commonly use Fuel. Most families also have Televisions and Generators which use Electricity
and Fuel respectively. Whereas some families cook using Stoves that use Fuel and also have wall
clocks that use Dry cells. It was also noted that most homes use flat irons for ironing clothes that
use electricity too. The survey also had it that some radios could use Dry cells.
Instructions
i. Using the knowledge of mappings, generate the domain using the list of items
mentioned in the above survey and the Range should be generated from what the
items use.
ii. Construct a mapping diagram for the items and what they use.
iii. State the type of mapping generated.
iv. Take a photo using your phone and upload your answers.

Functions
A function is a mapping where every number in the Domain has one number in the range to map
onto. So one to one and many to one mappings are functions.
Note:
One to many and many to many mappings are not functions.
