Paper Two Task Three Information

In Paper Two Task Three you are provided with ELT-related input, e.g. one or two extracts from material
for teachers or from a methodology/resource book, a lesson plan extract, a transcript of teachers
discussing a lesson, an extract from tutor feedback.

In this task you have to:


• answer specific questions about the material, e.g. interpreting the teacher’s role as exemplified in
the material, discussing the implications this view of teaching has for classroom practice.
• possibly analyze both historical and current perspectives on approaches and methodologies,
theories of language acquisition, resources, learner an teacher roles.

This task is assessing your ability to:


• analyse materials and resources produced by or for use by language teachers
• apply your analysis to different teachers, learners and contexts and identify how specified ELT teacher
roles, approaches, methodologies and techniques might help learners develop language and language
skills
• identify, describe and evaluate different teacher approaches, methodologies and techniques in ELT
• identify, explain and relate theories of first and second language acquisition to resources, approaches,
methodologies and materials produced by or for use by language teachers
• relate resources, approaches, methodologies and materials to teachers’ roles in a variety of ELT
practices.

MARKING
40 marks overall
• TWO marks are awarded for teach correct point made up to a maximum of 30 marks.
• A mark out of five is given for the depth of the overall response. This is doubled to a mark out of
10.

PROCEDURE:.
i) Read the rubric carefully and see which points you need to make for each part of the task.
ii) Use the letters from the task to organize your answer clearly
iii) Use bullet points to make it clear where one point finishes and the next one begins
iv) Remember to refer to your experience, speculate about different teaching contexts and refer
to your background reading to support and exemplify each point you make (to gain marks for
depth)
v) Write more than 15 points
vi) Spend about 35 minutes on this task.

Exam tips and recommendations

• Read the rubric carefully to understand what exactly you are asked to do.
• Lay out your answer clearly using letters form the task
• Use bullet points
• Do not make the same point twice in different parts of the task
• Leave space (one or two pages) to add more points if anything springs to mind
• Do not use names of authors and theories, but add a brief statement of what they are about
• Refer to your classroom experience
• Make sure your point is clear but avoid exemplifying or discussing possible consequences.
• Don’t write too much
• You can write more than 15 points here. There more the better.
