Noise&Interference
• Noiseisanyelectricalsignalpresentinacircuit
otherthanthedesiredsignal.
• Thisdefinitionexcludesthedistortionproducts
producedinacircuitduetononlinearities.
Althoughthesedistortionproductsmaybe
undesirable,theyarenotconsiderednoiseunless
theyarecoupledintoanotherpartofthecircuit.
• Itfollowsthatadesiredsignalinonepartofa
circuitcanbeconsideredtobenoisewhen
coupledtosomeotherpartofthecircuit.
Noise
• Noisesourcescanbegroupedintothefollowing
threecategories:
• (1)intrinsicnoisesourcesthatarisefromrandom
fluctuationswithinphysicalsystems,suchas
thermalandshotnoise;
• (2)man-madenoisesources,suchasmotors,
switches,computers,digitalelectronics,andradio
transmitters;and
• (3)noisecausedbynaturaldisturbances,suchas
lightningandsunspots.

• Susceptibilityisthecapabilityofadeviceor
circuittorespondtounwantedelectromagnetic
energy(i.e.,noise).
• Theoppositeofsusceptibilityisimmunity.
• Theimmunitylevelofacircuitordeviceisthe
electromagneticenvironmentinwhichthe
equipmentcanoperatesatisfactorily,without
degradation,andwithadefinedmarginofsafety.
• Onedifficultyindeterminingimmunity(or
susceptibility)levelsisdefiningwhatconstitutes
performancedegradation.

unacceptabledegradationasaresultof
electromagneticinterference[AmericanNational
StandardsInstitute(ANSI)C64.14-1992)].
ElectromagneticInterference:(EMI):
• Theprocessbywhichdisruptive
electromagnetic(EM)energyistransmitted
fromoneelectronicdevicetoanothervia
radiatedorconductedpaths(orboth).

particularlytoRFsignals;however,EMIis
observedthroughouttheEMspectrum.

• ThecomponentofRFenergythatisemittedthrougha
mediumasanEMfield.AlthoughRFenergyisusually

transmissionmaybepresent.

requiresmeasurementoftheradiatedelectric
field,andtheregulatorylimitsaregivenintermsof
thatfieldindBmV/m.
