The engine of a Caterpillar 988H was underperforming with low power output under load. Tests found the torque converter stall speed was lower than specifications. Replacing the air and fuel filters improved performance. Transmission engagement pressures and impeller clutch were calibrated. All pressure readings are now within specifications. The bucket is in poor condition with deep cracks and needs repair. Identified hoses that were leaking still have not been replaced, which is a concern as oil leaks are increasing.

What did you find wrong?
ENGINE POWER OUTPUT UNDER LOAD WAS BELOW SPECIFICATIONS.
How did you correct the trouble?
Carried out a torque converter stall test and the result was 1800 RPM instead of 2000 rpm Checked the fuel system performance and air system performance via ET and observed that there was a slight drop in performance. Boost pressure under load was below acceptable limits and also the engine was not reaching the maximum desired speed. We then requested that the air filters be replaced together with the fuel filters. (Asked LM to check the SMR records and verify if the machine was not due for a service.) *the air filter restriction indicator is damaged and should be replaced so as to assist in detecting if the air filters are clogged or not. In addition to this we also calibrated the transmission engagement pressures and the impeller clutch so as to rectify the slight anomalies that existed with regards to engagement pressures. Having done that all pressures are now within acceptable limits and the machine is back at work. It was also noted that the bucket is in a bad state and it’s advisable that we look at repairing the bucket and restoring its original state. Most of the cracks are deep rooted as you will see on the pictures attached below. On the other hand the hoses that were identified as leaking and had to be replaced still haven’t been changed and this is of great concern as the oil leaks are increasing. Sampled the transmission oil Below are results of the tests that were performed on the machine after rectifying the power loss problem:
