QUADRATIC INEQUALITIES

At the end of this lesson you should be able to:

1. Represent a quadratic inequality on a graph

Intro
1. Describe the solution to y> x + 2
2. Describe the solution to y /> -x -2
3. Describe the different solutions to a conjunction
4. Describe the different solutions to a disjunction

1. Describe the solution to y > x + 2

- To graph inequalities into two variables
To graph
1. Place the inequality in the vertex form y >,<, />,/< a(x-h)^2+k
2. Plot the vertex then use an x/y chart and the axis of symmetry to plot
more points
3. Use a solid line or dashed line for the parabola
4. For > or < shade above. For /< or /> shade below
*Or use a test point to determined where to shade

Example 1

Example 2
- To solve quadratic inequalities in one variable
One way to solve quadratic inequalities in one variable is to use a graph
The direction of the inequality symbol will determined the compound of the
solution
1. If > or /> then it'll be a disjunction
2. If < or /< then it'll be a conjunction

Example 1

Example 2
A second way is to find the x-intercepts (the critical x-values) and use test
points
