Functional Limitations and Application Recommendations

1. Operating and engineering tool DIGSI 5

Engineering with DIGSI 5 V01.20

Operating Language The operating language (DIGSI and device) is only available in
English.
Performance The performance is not optimized yet. Please consider that some
actions during the engineering may take some time to be executed.
Windows also limits the amount of memory that may be used.
DIGSI 5 may therefore request that the program execution is
terminated and restarted. Following the restart additional memory
is released.
Number of devices The number of devices that may be applied in one project is up to
30 devices.
Functions in the A function that monitors the device loading is included in DIGSI
device 5. The purpose of this monitoring function is to check that the
offline configuration will be able to run in the device without
degraded performance. Please check, in DIGSI 5, the actual
device loading during engineering. This is done by clicking on the
“Consistency Button”. At the same time consistency checks are
done. If the consistency and the device load is OK, DIGSI 5
permits loading of the configuration into the device.
Online mode It is possible to access the device in the “online” mode (access to
all data) as well as the “offline” mode. The offline mode also
provides protection relevant information such as disturbance
recordings and record entries. For the evaluation of protection
response we recommend using the offline mode.
Print Please note that at present the print function is not fully functional.

Deviations from the System Catalog

Copying In the present version it is limited to copy entire devices

USB-Stick The USB Stick is not yet supported
IP-Address IP Addresses can be assigned manually or assigned by DHCP
assignment (dynamic host configuration protocol)

2. Limitation in terms of device functions (7SA8, 7SD8, 7SL8, 7VK8) compared

with device catalog

Functions in the At two line end applications in breaker-and-a-half schemes the line
7SL87 differential and distance protection can operate in parallel.
2-Ended Fault Locator This functionality has not yet been implemented.
DIGSI 5 This functionality has not yet been implemented.

3. Communication modules and protocols

Connection with DIGSI 5 for operation and firmware upload

USB-Interface Use this interface only for the first initialization.

For subsequent and continuous use we recommend using the
Ethernet interface (Port J).
Communication For the firmware upload (IEC 61850 only) onto the communication
Firmware upload modules the option “Fast load configuration” in DIGSI 5 shall be
used. This option deactivates all functions in the device during the
upload process. Also logs and fault records are deleted in the
device.

Diagnostic functions for communication modules

Communication If a communication module reboots itself because of any internal

module reboot software error, the Health Indication will not be set to alarm or
warning nor will this be indicated to the user by a Health –
Indication

DNP 3 and IEC 60870-5-103 protocol

IEC 60870-5-103 For IEC 60870-5-103 the analog waveform capture only 3
fault record mapping channels (object type SAV) are pre-mapped in the default mapping
of an application template. Further mapping to the fault records
must be done manually by the user in the communication matrix for
this protocol by adding the IEC 60870-5-103 channel numbers. If
additional binary traces are desired these must be mapped in data
unit 1 or 2 of the protocol.
Time synchronization Don’t use IRIG-B as time source 1 and IEC 60870-5-103 protocol
as time source 2. If IEC 60870-5-103 protocol is used it is
recommended to use the protocol also for time synchronization by
using it as time source 1 (main source).
IEC 60870-5-103 During mapping of measurement values to data unit 3 and data
Mapping of unit 9, the user must begin with the position 1 and continue
measurement values sequentially with the positions 2, 3, 4… without any gaps. The
sequential check is at present not implemented in DIGSI 5.

Protection Interface

Bandwidth setting For devices connected via protection data interface a minimal
bandwidth must be configured for the slowest communication link.
This value must be configured in each device. If this value is not
configured the same in all devices the PI – communication will be
disturbed.
