Musical Characteristics of Some Philippine Festivals

In every festival parade and theater performances, participants play musical instruments
in rhythmical patterns that serves as their music during festive processions. The music
creates the rhythm of the dance performed in a Philippine festival. It is not just embodied as a
rich rhythm making people dance, but also carries the heart of the Filipinos. The music itself, every
beat and every tone contains the rich history and culture of the Philippines.

There are different festival dances in the Philippines which are mostly performed along
the streets and are celebrated in special days all year round. Here, you can witness the performers
dressed in costumes made out of indigenous materials that represent their products. They are
gathered on streets dance to the beat mostly of the drums. Festival dances could
either be religious or non-religious in nature. Some of the notable colorful festival dances in the
Philippines are; the Ati-atihan in Kalibo Aklan and Sinulog Festivals in Cebu City. Both of these
are celebrated in honor of the Child Jesus “Sto. Nino”.

of this festival is the loud chanting of “Viva! Santo

and-one-step-backward which is the natural step and the
kinampilan which is one step right foot forward and one step
backward, while the left foot stays in place imitating the Holy
Child Jesus. The prayer-dance is synchronized to the music
brought by the drums, trumpets and the native gongs

Another famous religious festival in the country is the

Sublian Festival in Batangas. It is a devotion to their
town patron which is the Holy Cross. It is usually
