• Ensure arrow on sensor gear aligned with upper
edge of cylinder head fE. DO NOT tighten nuts.
• Pull out toothed shaft on exhaust side as far as
stop.
• Install and release secondary tensioner 1iJ.
• Pre-load timing chain with tool to 6 in. Ibs. 19.
• Slightly pre-tension plate spring by pressing'on
sensor gear fE. Tighten nuts fingertight.
• Set camshaft timing with tool as follows:
NOTE: Remove gasket before fitting special
tool No.11 6 150 fIl.
o Tighten screws and nuts in two stages
(in sequence shown) fIl:
o First stage: 44 in. Ibs.
o Second stage:
'A' - 15 ft. Ibs.
'B', 'C' - 7 ft. Ibs.
• Install timing chain tensioner B.
• Remove alignment tools and turn crankshaft two
turns.
• Ensure NO.1 cylinder at TDC. Use special tools.
• Remove camshaft timing setting tool fIl.
• Install VANOS unit [i).
NOTE: Screws behind sealing caps have
LH threads 6.

D LH bank: Connect multimeter to VANOS unit
contact pin and to screw on oil line on cylinder
head 11]. Set multimeter to acoustic continuity
test.
D Using torque wrench set to 30 ft. Ibs. and
adjusting tool turn VANOS unit
counterclockwise towards left-hand stop 11],
until acoustic signal can be heard.
D Tighten camshaft sprocket bolts m (LH thread).
Tightening torque: 11 ft. Ibs. Loosen bolts 90°.
D RH bank: Repeat adjustment of VANOS unit
11]. Use multimeter.
D Tighten camshaft sprocket bolts 6 (LH thread).
Tightening torque: 11 ft. Ibs. Loosen bolts 90°.
D Pre-load timing chain with tools to 6 in. Ibs.lll.

• Turn crankshaft in normal direction of rotation
(unless otherwise stated).
• If required: Mark position of crankshaft position
(CKP) sensor before removal.
• Do NOT turn crankshaft via camshaft or other
sprockets.
• Observe all tightening torques.
Valve timing procedures
Removal
• Removal/installation of timing chain requires:
o Cylinder head removal.
o Oil pan removal.
• Position engine NO.1cylinder at TDC on as follows:
o Turn crankshaft until timing marks aligned D.
o Insert crankshaft locking pin D.
o Connect special tools to VANOS unit and turn
camshafts counterclockwise until grooves on
both camshafts aligned with grooves on
bearing covers 111 using spanner at positions
shown B.
o Ensure camshaft lobes are facing 111.
o Install camshaft alignment iool NO.115080 D.
NOTE: Tensioner plunger is spring loaded.

Installation
• Install camshaft sprockets with chain as follows.
o Ensure groove on exhaust camshaft aligned
with groove on camshaft bearing cap 1iJ.
o Ensure groove of intake camshaft at 10° to
groove on camshaft bearing cap [1J.
o Install exhaust camshaft sprocket with chai
as shown 6.
o Install intake camshaft sprocket with center of
long hole aligned with edge of cylinder head lil.
o Carefully fit half rings m and hub assembly
EI!I to intake camshaft sprocket. Insert screws
m
in position 'A' first (DO NOT tighten).
NOTE: Use original antimagnetic screws
only.
• Install chain tensioner IE as follows:
NOTE: Drain chain tensioner before
installation.
oPush chain tensioner carefully together IE].
oRepeat this procedure twice.
• Install camshaft alignment tool NO.117341/2 m.
• Check function of VANOS unit. Use special tool IE.
• VANOS unit splined shafts MUST be in 'retardea
position before/during installation IE. Use
special tool.
• Turn splined hubs on intake and exhaust
camshafts clockwise as far as stop m.
• Fit VANOS unit and secure to cylinder head wilt-
two screws.
• Tighten two accessible screws on intake mane
exhaust camshafts. Tightening torque: 7 ft. Ibs.
• Remove crankshaft locking pin D.
• Turn crankshaft and tighten remaining screws or
intake and exhaust camshafts. Tightening
torque: 7 ft. Ibs.
• Check engine at TDC on NO.1 cylinder. Use too
Nos.11 2 300/11 5 080.
• Install upper chain guide m.
• Fit remaining screws and tighten VANOS unit.
NOTE: Crankshaft damper hub bolts MUST
only be used once.
