Calculations:
Grating element (a + b) = 2.54/N=
19000 per cm.
Where N number of rulings
=

per inch on the grating.

The wavelength ot sodium light can be
calculated by

A = (a +b) sine 2.54

1500 Sm.0.44) 5313 A
n
where n=l for first order and 2 for second
n=
order.
Result: The wavelength of sodium light is found to be..A.U.
....A.U.

Sources of error and Precautions:

1. Before performing the experiment, the spectrometer should be adjusted.
2. Grating should be set norrial to the incident light.
3. Grating should not be touched by fingers.
4. While taking observations, telescope and prism table should be kept fixed.
