THERMODYNAMICS I (ME 232)

Sheet No. 4: Mixtures.

1. A mixture of carbon monoxide and oxygen is to be prepared in the proportion of 7 kg to 4 kg

in a vessel of 0.3 m3 capacity. If the temperature of the mixture is 15 °C determine the pressure
to which is the vessel subject. If the temperature raised to 40 °C what will then be the pressure
in the vessel ?

2. For the mixture in problem 1 calculate the volumetric analysis, the molar mass and the
characteristic gas constant, calculate also the total amount of substance in the mixture

3. An exhaust gas is analyzed and is found to contain by volume 78 % N2, 12% CO2 and 10% O2.
What is the corresponding gravimetric analysis? Calculate the molar mass of the mixture and
the density if the temperature is 550 °C and the total pressure is 1 bar.

4. The gravimetric analysis of air is 23.14% oxygen, 75.53% nitrogen, 1.28% argon, 0.05%
carbon dioxide. Calculate the specific gas constant for air and the molar mass, then calculate
the analysis by volume and the partial pressure for each constituent when the total pressure is 2
bars.

5. A vessel of volume 0.4 m3 contains 0.45 kg of Carbon Monoxide (CO) and 1 kg of Air at
32oC, consider the gravimetric analysis of Air as (75.53 % N2, 1.33 % Ar and 23.14 % O2).
Calculate:
a. The partial pressure of each constituent.
b. The volumetric analysis of the mixture.
c. The value specific gas constant (R) for the mixture.

6. A mixture of H2 and O2 is to be made so the ratio of H2 to O2 is 2 to 1 by volume. Calculate

the mass of O2 required and the volume of the container, per kilogram of H2, if the pressure
and temperature are 1 bar and 15 °C respectively.
