7 step of moral reasoning process

1. Gather the facts

An essential first-step
Know the available facts at hand(foreground factors) and facts currently not known
(background factors) but that NEED TO BE ASCERTAINED.
What do we know and What do we need to know

2. Identify the stakeholders

Identify who are the individual of the case which usually pose a dilemma
Ethical dilemmas usually involve many people, and each of their point of view may seem to be
valid, if considered carefully

Dilemma = means double proposition

Articulating a dilemma don’t focus on action itself but of values.

3. Articulate dilemma
Ask yourself: “WHAT’S BOTHERING ME?”
WHICH VALUES ARE AT PLAY?
CONSTRUCT A DILEMMA STATEMENT
“the issue of miss A is ______ versus the issue of miss B ________

 Do not simply look on actions but dig dipper on principle.

 Be careful of false dichotomies

4. List the alternatives

Brainstorm for options, then eliminate the untenable ones.

5. Compare the alternative with the values/principle

match the alternative with values
Eliminate alternatives of the moral values that they uphold which are not important

6. Weigh the consequences

Consider both positive and negative consequences

7. Make a decision
Deliberation cannot go on forever. At some point, a decision must be made. Avoid “paralysis by
analysis”
Realize that on confronting a dilemma, there are no easy and painless solutions to them
Strategize.
