CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Construction materials are one of the major requirements in building a

structures. The type and form of structure is determined by the type of materials used.

Construction materials are durable if they can sustain any natural calamities and any

other factors without deterioration and decreasing their quality. Due to globalization

and urbanization, construction materials become a huge demand in the industry. This

causes shortage to some manufacturers and producers. I come up with this kind of idea

to test the durability and sustainability of the said materials.

The construction industry consumes large amounts of raw materials. DEFRA

(2015) states, that in the United Kingdom alone, with the population of just over 65

million, the annual consumption of material resources amounts to more than 420

million tonnes, and large areas of land are converted from rural to urban areas.

There are plenty of materials available in contemporary Thailand. Some studies

of proper materials for residents in Thailand are published by the Department of

Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE), the Thai Ministry of Energy. They

suggest and encourage residents to use certain materials for buildings, but with a

narrow focus on energy conservation. To meet the highest potential of sustainability,

these materials should be produced in a way that will reduce pollution, increase the

overall quality of materials, and reduce expenditure (Thovichit, 2007).

Philippines belong to the most affected countries by Climate Change around the

gloub (UN HABITAT), which causes viscous cycles of vulnerability for the urban poor.

Adequate housing is a desire of most affected people, conventional building

technologies, such as concrete and steel, as well as the systems to finance and obtain

them, are mostly not adjusted to the affordability of low-income dwellers.

In finding the best building material it should be suitable and durable in the in

the Philippine climate and weather. Since Philippines is tropically hot and humid it may

affect the materials used in houses.

There is a vast array of artificial and man-made products that are used for

construction. Most common construction materials in the Philippines are mud and clay,

rock, wood, brick and block, concrete, steel and metal, glass, ceramics, plastics, and

cement composites ( Regan Industrial Sales, Inc., 2021). Concrete is the most used

building materials as the actual foundation of the house because of its durabilty and

strength.

As time folds, we experienced a lot of calamities and disasters such as typhoon,

flood and numerous earthquakes and construction materials or raw materials must be

durable and can sustaun when this calamities hit. Therefore this research aims to

determine the durability and sustainability of construction materials in the local markets

of Hagonoy, Davao del Sur.

Theoretical Framework

This study is anchored on the concept of Gorbunov (2016) which states that

improving a performance characteristics of construction. This study was supprted by

Naser which states that building components are to be designed to satisfy the

requirements of serviceability and safety limit states.

Nireki (1996), mentions that to ensure adequate performance of the structurer over

its design, durability should be understood. This was backed up by another study from

Saba (2013) which concluded that carrying out different expirements to further compare

the effects of various factors on the different structural materials and on the structure's

performance is necessary.

Conceptual Framework

The figure 1 below shows the conceptual framework of the study showing the

association between the dependent and independent variables. The independent

variable is the availability of construction materials such as cement, wood, steel, and
hollow blocks in the local market of Hagonoy. The dependent variable is the

characteristics of construction materials in terms of durability, sustainability, and

affordability.
