WEEK DAY

OBJECTIVES illustrate information, data, knowledge, and information literacy.

Give the importance of being responsible producer and user of information.
Access information ethically and legally.
CONCEPTS The invention of the computer and the creation of the internet opened the door for an
interconnected society where massive information are being sent and received by people
every second. However, this unprecedented advancement also brings a number of conflict
to its user. The problem with Information age is the proliferation of wrong information.
Information literacy is a set of abilities that enables an individual to recognize when
information is needed, locate, evaluate; use effectively the needed information.
Information is a broad term derived from study, experiences, or instruction. People often
confuse information with data and knowledge and use three terms interchangeably.

Knowl
edge
Information
Data

Data refers to unstructured fact and figures that create the least impact on the receiver.
Data become information when they are contextualized, categorized, and condensed.
Information therefore is data organized with relevance and purpose, made meaningful by a
person. Words, news, and number are data that become information when people associate
something to it that make it useful to them. Knowledge refers to the human understanding
of a subject matter derived from experience, learning and thinking.
Example, the text within this content are data; your consumption of text as the information;
and the storage of this information within your memory as knowledge.

ETHICAL USE OF INFORMATION

1. PRIVACY- state of being alone or being away from public attention. In this age,
where information is easily accessible through the internet, the concept of privacy is
often questioned. Almost in information is within public search, even it is tagged as
private in a digital medium, still it can be accessed by a technology expert. This is
why different life-ruining scandals happen.
2. ACCURACY- relates to the correctness of the information source to the details of the

information. Dates, places, persons involved and other details are essential data in
testing the accuracy of an information source.
3. PLAGIARISM- plagiarize is to use the words or ideas of another person as if they
were your own. Plagiarism is a usual problem on the internet these days. Since
people have wide access to huge number of information online, it is easy for them to
download or copy-paste materials on the web. Often, others do not properly cite or
mention their sources.

QUESTIONS/ACTIVITY
ACTIVITY
Students will be under examination and test how broad their understanding about the
concept of information literacy. They should be able to describe the information literacy by
doing and answering the following.
1. Are all information available in the internet are reliable?
2. Is finding high quality information is now easier because of new media?
3. Is information literacy can consider critical thinking?
4. Make a matrix that represents the concept of data with information and knowledge
which should gather and based on everyday life situation. Example: student’s report
card, record of blood pressure, someone’s schedule etc.

ACTIVITY
BOON or BANE
Students will state how important it is to follow the proper handling and disposal of
information by giving its advantages and disadvantages. Give at least 10 situations each
category and answer the question given.

How will you become a wise consumer of information?

In this modern age, how can you ensure your protection from too much information?

ASSESSMENT/ Each student will conduct a research by not violating the privacy, gather accurate and
APPLICATION reliable information and avoiding plagiarism. Search any of the following topic below.

WEEK DAY

OBJECTIVES Classify the sources of information into their types and formats.
Justify the significance of different platforms where you can find information sources and
the importance of evaluating information and media.
Evaluate the information and media meticulously and critically.
CONCEPTS There are three types of information sources: primary, secondary, and tertiary sources.
Primary sources is an original, uninterpreted, or first hand material of information, created
by the person directly involved in an activity or an event. Secondary sources provides an
information obtained through a number primary sources, and has undergone editing or
interpretation. It may offer interpretation of the information gathered from primary sources
providing a different perspective for the readers. Tertiary source consist of summaries and
collection of both primary and secondary sources. Unlike the first two types of information
sources, tertiary sources are not always considered to be acceptable materials for academic
researches as they only provide overviews of the original reference. Reference material that
list or summarize ideas or information are also considered tertiary sources.
Information sources can be classified into two formats, namely print and nonprint.
1. Print
Books, letters, newspapers, magazines, dictionaries and many more
2. Nonprint
Audio, microfilm, microform, digital documents, and other materials in digital forms.
There are number of places to go to as information sources, the most common of which are
the following:
Library, a means of access to information, ideas and work of information. It is a building or
room that contains a collection of books, periodicals, and/or audio-visual materials. It
provides easy access to reliable and essential resources for research.
Internet is a global network of computers that allows computer user around the wprld to
share information for various purposes. It is interconnected network of networks, where
each host________ a computer directly connected to the internet ______ has a number of other
computers connected to it.
Indigenous media, another important but somehow neglected sources of information. This
is refers to a form of media conceptualized, produced and circulated by indigenous people

as vehicles for communication especially for cultural preservation, cultural and artistic
expression, political self-determination, and cultural sovereignty. Folklore, folk music and
dance, and other indigenous art are considered indigenous media.

Evaluating Information and Media.

1. What/who is the source of information?
It is necessary that before you believe an information, you must first know what or
who is its information source. Typically, an information source can be found through
a citation or a bibliography.
2. What is the medium used?
The medium used in presenting information is also crucial in evaluating information.
Triangulation must also be applied in this process. If the medium used is a journal or
a research paper, there is a bigger chance that the information underwent a
meticulous evaluation process before being presented to the public.
3. What is the purpose?
Information sources have reason why they present information: to inform, to
persuade, to entertain, or to advertise.
4. How is the information made?
The answer to this question will vary upon the type of information being evaluated.
Text, audio, motion, and multimedia all have different styles in guidelines in
production, this is why it is important for you to learn, not just how to evaluate
information, but also produced them.
QUESTIONS/ACTIVITY ACTIVITY
Give at least 15 example of information sources. Classify which types and formats of
information sources each example should be belong.
Ex. Photos- primary source, print

ACTIVITY
Self-check
Students will recall when did they last visit library? When shall they use the internet and the
library for obtaining information? Why do they have to consider the place before they find
information? Why do they have to evaluate the information source before use and distribute
the information?

ASSESSMENT/ Each student, pick a local news in the newspaper. Evaluate the information presented by
APPLICATION answering the question.
1. Who/what is the source of information?
2. What is the medium used?
3. What is the reason behind releasing or showing this information to the public?
4. How is the information made?

OBJECTIVES Interpret the content that visual information shows

Relate the power of visual information and media to the daily lives of Filipinos.
Produce a figure by following the guidelines in producing visual information
CONCEPTS Symbols, picture, icons, signs, and others that communicate with one’s sense of sight are
called visual media. It can be ideogram, statistical visualization, picture, graphic design,
video, 3-D image. The information that a person gets from these visual media is called visual
information. This process of giving and receiving visual information through media is called
visual communication.
The Power of Visual Information
A. The power to persuade
B. The power to affect
C. The power to make and break
Visual literacy, the learned ability to interpret visual images accurately and to create such
messages. These competencies of visual literacy have been assimilated from the perspective
of many visual literacy scholars.
A. Primary level,
1. Manipulation (changing objects)
2. Construction (producing simple visuals, taking picture)
3. Abstraction (identifying concepts from art elements)
B. Skilled level
1. Manipulation (using tools for problem-solving)
2. Construction (drawing with perspective; controlling variables in picture
taking; origami; interpreting instructions)
3. Abstraction (creating visual plans; specifying photographic treatment
for subjects; creating visuals from verbals and vice versa)
C. Advanced level
1. Manipulation (mental manipulations of complex representations)
2. Construction (drawing in 3-D; creating own visual style; producing
multimedia information)
3. Abstraction (lateral thinking, visual institution, visual invention;
describing visual ideas verbally)

medium.
Producing a visual information
Like in the production of any information, the first thing that one should remember is
triangulation. It is also important to provide clarity, simplicity, and emphasis in producing
your visual information.
1. Providing clarity and simplicity
The first rule in making you visual information legible is to make the content stand
out from the background. Remember also that your primary objective in producing
visual information is to inform.
1. For pictures
2. For symbols
3. For maps
2. Providing emphasis
Emphasis in visual message is achieved by highlighting the most essential element
and reducing the less essential ones.
QUESTIONS/ACTIVITY ACTIVITY
Pick out local logos and foreign logos. Classify what emotion their logos suggest based on
their colors.

ACTIVITY
Explain the following question regarding the power of visual information and media.

How do you think people use the power of visual information and media?
How do they use it within a society and within themselves?

WEEK DAY

OBJECTIVES Explain the development of common media people mostly used.

Give a reflection on how the media evolve.
Explore the different platforms that offer massive open online courses.
CONCEPTS In order to understand the current and future trends in media and information, one must
know the life cycle patterns that a particular medium undergoes and how it has changed
through a particular period of time. Potter saw a consistent pattern to explain the
development of mass media. This life cycle pattern can be summarized into five stages,
namely: innovation, penetration, peak, decline and adaptation.
 Innovation stage- each mass medium starts with a technological advancement. The
development of mass media was made possible through introduction of a new
medium.
 Penetration stage- after the innovation of the new form of technology, it now enters
the market, with the consumers buying and trying it. This is where the medium
enters the penetration stage. This stage is characterized by public’s growing
acceptance and positive evaluation of the invented medium.
 Peak stage- the moment when the medium reaches its maximum penetration is the
peak stage. Here, the medium gains the most attention and utilization, generating
more revenues compared to the other media.
 Decline stage- although a particular medium has already reached its peak, sooner or
later it will be challenged by a new form of media which may cause its decline.
 Adaptation stage-with rise of the new media, declining medium should find ways to
counter the shifting balance or else it may become obsolete. This calls for the
adaptation stage, where the old medium tries to redefine and redesign its position
and presence in the media market.

Massive open online courses (MOOC) target a wide range audience (massive); are free
(open); and are accessible through the internet (online). Anyone with
computer/tablet/smartphone and an internet connection can enroll in a MOOC that usually
take about four to 15 weeks. A MOOC commonly consist of modules, class videos of
university professors and graded examinations.

Bringing the technological revolution to even higher level, scientist have come with
technology that people could actually wear. It is called wearable technology, and is specially
design to be worn by a person. It aims to give the user an easy experience of the device
and/or enhance the users sense without hassle. Some examples of wearable technology
include the following.
 Smart watch
 Fitness trackers
 Smart eyewear
 Smart clothing
 Medical devices

There has been quite a lot of raves for three-dimensional (3D) technology ever since 3D films
came to existence in the early 1900s. a hologram is a 3D image reproduced through
recording lights from lasers scattered form an object. Today holography experts can only do
static holograms, or images similar to the 3D images that you see when you watch movie
with 3D glasses on, only showcasing more depth

WEEK DAY

OBJECTIVES Described how to utilize the power of media and information.

Share an insight on how influential the media and information.
Give the benefits that Filipino gets from media and information.
CONCEPTS People are no longer mere consumers of the media and other information sources, but are
now producers as well. People are now both sources and the channels of information. You
must be aware on how much power do you have because of your capacity to use media and
information. However, this power comes with challenges, as a consumer of information you
must understand which of the information you get are true and as producer, you must make
sure that the information you disseminate is valid and accurate.
How powerful are you then? How much power do media and information have in the
following:
 Society
Filipinos can now easily communicate with foreign individuals and groups in just a
click or a tap. New media transformed the world into one big society, where diverse
cultures are woven into a multicolored flag of unity.
 Education
Media have been used by people to educate and be educated. Printed media such
as books, and journals, play key roles in the educational formation of society.
Students are provided with textbooks which mediate experts in imparting their
knowledge of different fields. Academicians write on journals to inform other
scholars of their latest discoveries in specific areas
 Economy
Economic actors such as government, private businesses, need accurate, valid, and
new information as bases for allocation of resources. Moreover, if mass media are
free to monitor and deliver economic information in certain country, the
government can supervise the issues the country is facing, which may lead to the

information of better policies.

 Politics
Media group serves as the “fourth estate” or watchdogs of the government. They
are free to expose issues of corruption, investigate in social problems, and cover
news stories that are nationally relevant. Mass media encourage citizen
engagement and participatory governance. The information proliferated by media
proved to Filipinos that with their full cooperation, development is attainable.

Potter explained that media effects can bring positive and/or negative effects, depending on
the judgement of the audience. From an individual perspective, positive effects refer to the
achievement of one’s personal goals, this despite a number of adverse effects. There are
different types of media. These types refer to how the individual experiences the media
effects that can be either intentional or unintentional. Potter mentioned six types:
1. Cognitive
- The most pervasive media can affect what people know by planting ideas and
information into their minds.
2. Belief
- Related to the values and principles people have in their lives due to the
influence brought about by media.
3. Attitudinal
- Evaluative judgement about the standards and values set by media.
4. Emotional
- Refers to media’s capacity to trigger or affect an audience’s emotions.
5. Physiological
- Reaction of bodily system to media messages.
6. Behavioral
- Says that media can trigger an audience to do certain actions.

QUESTIONS/ACTIVITY ACTIVITY
Which of the following do you believe are true, and which are false? Kindly explain and
justify your answer why it is true or false.
1. Nothing is private on social media.
2. Media provide economic opportunities for people of all ages.
3. Abuse in media and information usage can risk the consumer himself/herself.
