COMPLEX ENGINEERING TASK CLO-3 PLO-3

TASK:
Design a circuit for single phase motor using 3-Phase Magnetic Contactor. Also write the working
principle of the Magnetic Contactor with On and Off switch.

THEORY / BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE:

By using the on off switch, we are able to toggle the circuit which reverses the 3-phase magnetic
contactor and makes the motor rotate in the opposite direction to when the switch was
previously toggled to. If there was a earth line instead of the negative wire, the circuit would
simply turn off. There are manually operated means of starting a three phase motor. However a
contactor based motor starter offers several advantages: low power control circuits using push
buttons, limit switches etc. being the major advantage. Another advantage is the under voltage
release protection provided by the contactor having a hold in contact. I believe we use magnetic
contactor in 3-phase motor start so that the 3- different phases can all simultaneously be
switched together…In the switching action, timing is very important and therefore we can easily
achieve the synchronous switching action required, as only one switch action can easily
implement the switching’s of all the three required parameters …The importance of timing
specially if intended to be synced with zero crossings to minimize arcing and contact bounce.

FINDINGS/RESULTS:
We start by bringing in the 2 power leads to L1 and L2 on the contactor. Then we add a jumper
wire from L3 on the contactor to T2 on the overload relay. Please note, as this jumper wire will
be carrying line power to the motor it is important the wire gage is selected based on the
current load going through the contactor. This directs the current through from L2 and directs it
through the 3rd phase on the contactor and overload (L3 & T3). Then you connect the 2 motor
leads to T1 and T3. Using this method, the current is balanced between the 3 poles on the
overload.

CONCLUSION:
Single phase power is typically reserved for lower power requirements, however in some cases
powering a small motor with single phase input power is practical. Single phase motor starters
are not commonly available since this is a rare case, and with a little bit of know-how, a 3-phase
motor starter can easily be wired for single phase power.
