SL Linear Functions Paper 2 [80 marks]

1a. [3 marks]
The dose D (in milligrams, mg) of a h certain medicine for a child of mass m kg is
determined by the equation D = am + b, where a and b are constants. For a child of mass 20
kg the correct dose is 124 mg, and for a child of mass 25 kg the correct dose is 147.5 mg.

Determine the value of a and the value of b.

1b. [2 marks]

Find the correct dose that should be given to a child with mass 23 kg.

1c. [2 marks]
Suggest reason(s) why the equation may not be appropriate for determining the dosage
required for an adult with mass 100 kg.
2a. [2 marks]
A large underground tank is constructed at Mills Airport to store fuel. The tank is in the
shape of an isosceles trapezoidal prism, ABCDEFGH.
AB = 70m , AF = 110m, AD = 130m, BC = 130m and CD = 200m. The tank is illustrated
below.

Find ℎ, the height of the tank.

2b. [3 marks]
Show that the volume of the tank is 1670000m3 , correct to three significant figures.
2c. [1 mark]
Once construction was complete, a fuel pump was used to pump fuel into the empty tank.
The amount of fuel pumped into the tank by this pump each hour decreases as an
arithmetic sequence with terms 𝑢1 , 𝑢2 , 𝑢3 , … , 𝑢𝑛 .
Part of this sequence is shown in the table.

Hour (n) 1st 2nd 3rd …

Amount of fuel pumped into the 90000 86400 82800 …

tank in each hour, in 𝑚3 (𝑢𝑛 )

Write down the common difference, 𝑑.

2d. [2 marks]
Find the amount of fuel pumped into the tank in the 14th hour.

2e. [2 marks]
Find the value of 𝑛 such that 𝑢𝑛 = 0.
2f. [1 mark]
Write down the number of hours that the pump was pumping fuel into the tank.

2g. [2 marks]
At the end of the 2nd hour, the total volume of fuel in the tank was 176400m3 .
Find the total amount of fuel pumped into the tank in the first 8 hours.

2h. [3 marks]
How long will it take the pump to completely fill the tank?
3a. [4 marks]
In an arithmetic sequence, 𝑢1 = 1.3 , 𝑢2 = 1.8 and 𝑢𝑘 = 16.3.
Find the value of 𝑘.

3b. [2 marks]
Find the exact value of 𝑆𝑘 .
4a. [2 marks]
Denise organizes a party for her work colleagues. The cost to rent a local hall is $480 for
the evening. She then has to budget for food, which will cost approximately $19.50 per
person. Write down a formula connecting the total cost of the evening ($C) with the
number of people attending (P).

4b. [2 marks]
Find the total cost for the evening if 36 people attend.

4c. [3 marks]
Given that Denise has a maximum budget of $2000, find the greatest number of people she
is able to invite.

4d. [3 marks]
In the end, only 19 people will attend. Calculate how much each person should be charged
so that Denise covers her costs.
5a. [2 marks]
Consider 𝑆𝑛 = ∑𝑛𝑖=1(2 − 0.4𝑖), where 𝑛 ≥ 1. Write 𝑆6 as a sum of terms.

5b. [1 mark]
Classify the series 𝑆𝑛 .

5c. [3 marks]
Write down an expression for 𝑆𝑛 .

5d. [3 marks]
Find n if it is known that 𝑆𝑛 = −292.4.

6a. [4 marks]
Consider the function 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏, where a and b are constants.

The domain of 𝑓 is −2 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 5 and the function goes through the points (−3, 9) and (3 , 3).
Determine the exact values of a and b.
6b. [4 marks]
Find the range of 𝑓.

6c. [4 marks]
Find an expression for 𝑓 −1 (𝑥)and state its domain.

6d. [3 marks]
Determine if 𝑓 −1 (11) exists.

The price of renting a car (£C) from n "Dollar" for d days is given by the formula
C= 300 + 17.5d. The price of renting a car (£C) from "Penny" for d days is given by the
formula C= 500 + 10.3d. Abel wishes to rent a car for the duration of his holiday. He decides
to rent from "Dollar" as it will be cheaper for him.
What is the minimum length of Abel's holiday?

7b. [4 marks]
If Abel's holiday is between 14 and 21 days, find an inequality which shows the range in
which Abel's car rental bill will lie.

The formula for the volume of a sphere is given as 𝑉 = 3 𝜋𝑟 3 , where r is the
radius of the sphere, a. If the radius of a particular sphere is 3.58 cm, measured to the
nearest hundreth of a centimeter, find lower and upper bounds for its volume.
8b. [6 marks]
Another sphere is designed to have a volume of 500 cm3, to the nearest 10 cm3. Find the
boundaries between which its radius must lie.
