separator can be utilized to extend component service life and increase the
electrical output. It is located in the cross-under piping (cold reheat line) in

SPX plate heat exchangers (PHEs) offer solutions for heat transfer applications
in the power industry that historically were served by shell-and-tube technology.
Plate heat exchangers play an increasingly important role in helping power
producers meet stringent water environmental and energy conservation

Nuclear Control Valves
SPX has engineered and manufactured valves for the nuclear industry for over
40 years under the Copes-Vulcan® brand. Products include globe, gate, swing,
check, butterfly, ball and sampling valves for nuclear customers, and are all
ASME Section III “N” and “NPT” Stamp certified.
Global Supplier
In 2009, SPX reached an agreement with a nuclear equipment manufacturer
to provide highly specialized squib valves for up to twelve new nuclear power
stations in the United States and China.

Chemical Injection Systems

feedwater in all types of power plants.

Air Intakes and Filters
SPX manufactures standard air intake filter systems for gas turbines and
turbo compressors with capacities which can exceed 600m3/s (21,200 cfs)
and different transition styles up to 30 sq m (320sq ft). Disposable filter
elements are also manufactured conforming to ASHRAE™, EN and ARAMCO™
specifications. Customer engineered air intake systems are available for
applications in hostile environments, including acid gas removal.

Top-Entry Mixers
There are three types of top entry mixers for the power industry. They are built to
handle the severe duty of solids suspension and re-suspension, blending and gas
dispersion.
• Series 10 — smaller vessels, sumps, solids suspension and re-suspension
• 70/80 Series — FGD Process Mixers (limestone, gypsum slurries)
• 700/800 Series — large storage tanks and absorber agitators

SPX offers the only corrosion-resistant resin system that incorporates high
efficiency operation. For use in corrosive slurries, the SX system costs the same

Instrument Air Dryers
SPX provides compressed-air dryers and filters that remove oil, water, dirt, rust
and pipe scale. Contaminants found in compressed air can adversely affect
all components of an air-distribution system, and can cause a malfunction of
pneumatic control in the instrument air system. Properly treated compressed air
can improve work efficiency and reduces maintenance. SPX desiccant dryers
incorporate these quality features:
• Highly hygroscopic desiccants combine spherical uniformity with superior
crush strength to deliver stable dew point performance and low dust creation
• High quality process switching valves deliver consistent repeatability to ensure
system integrity and long component life cycles
• Precision timing circuits control process valve sequencing protocols to deliver
optimum dew point stability and energy efficiency
• Calculated desiccant bed construction ensures ideal tower velocities to absorb
moisture, stabilize dew points and prevent bed movement
• Spare mufflers included on all models and sizes
as a coolant in electrical power plant generators. It removes water, oil and other
contaminants that cause corrosion and cracking in retaining and zone rings, and
reduces lead carbonate formation, increased windage losses and other potentially

Transformers – Dielectric Fluids – Filtration Systems
Waukesha transformers are synonymous with quality and reliability and are
manufactured at the company’s state-of-the-art transformer plants in Waukesha,
WI and Goldsboro, NC. All Waukesha transformers are designed, manufactured
and tested in accordance with the latest standards of IEEE™, ANSI™ and NEMA™
and the quality standards of ANSI/ASQC 9001 and ISO 9001: 2008.

In addition to quality and reliability, Waukesha currently leads the world’s power
transformer industry in the resolution of issues related to applying FR3 fluid in
medium and large power transformers. Waukesha has done a variety of tests to
understand how to use natural ester fluid in larger transformers. Waukesha has
built more new power transformers and retrofilled more existing units with FR3
than any other manufacturer on record.

• Environmental biodegradability
In conjunction with recognized testing organizations, the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPS) created the Environmental Technology Verification
(ETV) Program to further environmental protection by accelerating the
acceptance and use of innovative, improved and more cost-effective
technologies. By objectively and systematically documenting the performance
of commercial-ready environmental technologies, the ETV program assists and
informs those in need of credible data before utilizing a new technology.
• Fire safety
This benefit comes from having an exceptionally high fire point (360°C).
Because of this, FR3 fluid is listed as a Less-Flammable Dielectric Liquid by
Factory Mutual and Underwriters Laboratories for use in complying with the
National Electric Code™ (NEC) and insurance requirements.
• Slows the aging rate of cellulose insulation versus the same material in mineral
oil tests conducted by the developer, indicating a dramatic increase in cellulose
insulation life.
• Dramatically smaller carbon footprint than traditional mineral oil. According
to calculations made by the National Institute of Standards and Technology
(NIST) using their B.E.E.S. calculator, natural esters have less than two percent
of the carbon footprint of mineral oil.
