SBA TITLE
Using Measurements to Build a Bookcase
INTRODUCTION
Abigail Smith, a 17 year old girl who likes to read, has just recently shown interest in
collecting books. She decided to start a book collect but later realized that her old bookcase
had outgrown her books and broke. She wants to build a bookcase big enough to
accommodate her collection and possibly future collection.
METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION
After much deliberation, Abigail decided that hiring a Carpenter would be the best choice.
She contacted the carpenter and explain that she wants the bookcase 6ft tall with roughly 5
shelves and showed him the space where the bookcase should be able to fit. Abigail was then
given a list of materials that will be needed for the completion of the bookcase.
Abigail visited 3 different hardwares in Brown’s Town (Charles Hardware, Nam’s Hardware
and Finishing Touch Hardware) with a list of the required materials needed with the aim of
comparing prices to find out which is the cheapest.

LABOUR
$25,000
ANALYSIS OF DATA
Abigail and the carpenter came to an agreement that she will be paying him $25,000.00 to
complete the job. After visiting all three hardware Abigail decided to make her purchase at
Nam’s Hardware seeing that they had the most reasonable prices of all three hardware.
At the hardware Abigail purchased the following materials: 1 tin Polyurethane, 1 tin Varnish,
1 lb. Wood Filler, 5 sheets Sandpaper, 1 bottle Wood Glue, 1 ¾” sheet Ply Board, 1 ¼” sheet
Ply Wood, 1 lb. ¼” Pocket Hole Screw, 1 lb. ¼” Shelf Screw and 5 lb. Nails which came up
to a total of $14,166.61. Overall Abigail is looking to spend a total of $40,166.61, which
includes the cost of labour and the cost of additional material that were purchased
DISCUSSION OF FINDINGS
Abigail ended up with a bigger bookcase than she had previously requested and also had to
spend extra. Though it was expected that the material that were bought would have
completed the bookcase, Abigail had to make some extra purchases. Upon building the
bookcase, it was discovered that if Abigail needed a 6ft tall bookcase, instead of 5 shelves it
could hold 6 shelves, which she agreed to since she did not know how big her collection
would be. Abigail went back to Nam’s Hardware where she purchased ½ lb. ¼” pocket holes
screw, ½ lb. ¼” shelf screw and a bottle of wood glue. The three items came to a total of
$1,300 but Abigail got a 10% discount and ended up paying $1,170 for the materials.
CONCLUSION
Before I started this SBA, it was expected that the bookcase would have been completed with
the materials that were purchased at first, however, changes had to be made because while
completing the project it was discovered that Abigail could have gotten a bigger bookcase,
hence additional materials had to be bought as shown in the data presented above. This SBA
then serves as future prove for any individual that wishes to not only build a bookcase but to
complete any projects, that they need to research and analyse more in order to avoid the
problems that were encountered in this SBA.
