1 Introduction

Water Jet Cutting Systems can be used for the cutting of munitions and rockets. During this
cutting process a significant amount of waste water contaminated with abrasives, metal parts
as well as with mechanically and chemically dissolved explosives and propellant will be
generated.

This document provides an overview of a Waste Water Treatment (WWT) process for the
cleaning waste water produced by Water Jet Cutting Systems. The WWT is able to handle
waste water resulting from cutting of conventional munitions as well from cutting rocket
motors filled with Ammonium perchlorate. The restriction associated with this particular
chemical will be addressed later (Chapter 2). The WWT can recover up to 80% off the waste
water. Thus only the 20% of the waste water that remains will require disposal.

2 General Description

The Dynasafe Waste Water Treatment system is designed to work with waste water from a
variety of Water Jet Water Cutting systems. The WWT system is highly mobile and will be
delivered on a flat rack in order to make this possible.

The WWT System is designed to treat waste water containing a variety of modern explosives.
This includes compositions such as TNT, HMX, RDX, PETN, single and double base
propellant as well as Ammonium perchlorate, all of which may result from the cutting of
conventional munitions in a Water Jet Cutting System.

2.1 Process Description

The basic principle of operation is removal of contaminants via rapid UV/oxidation. The
process oxidizes organic and explosive constituents in the contaminated water by the addition
of strong oxidizers and irradiation with ultraviolet light.

The oxidation reactions are achieved through the synergistic action of high intensity UV light
in combination with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The UV/oxidation process generates highly
reactive hydroxyl radicals (OH-) that react with and destroy most organic chemical
compounds. If complete mineralization is achieved in the reaction, the final products of the
process are carbon dioxide, water and salts.

(UV system with H2O2)

Water coming from the water jet is transferred to the Reactor Tank by passing
through a filtration system which removes particles larger than 5 µm. In the Reactor Tank
UV Oxidation will eliminate most organic chemicals. During the process 20% of waste
water that remains will require disposal (Drain). After the process is finalized water will
be transferred to the Clean Water Tank and can be re-used in the water jet system.

2.3 Equipment

With the proper selection of components a wide variety of waste water conditions, flow rates
and pressures and throughputs can be met. The following are just examples illustrating a
basic configuration.

2.3.1 Self Cleaning Filter

Waste water resulting from water jet cutting process is transferred to a collecting tank through
a Filter. The Filter will remove particles bigger than 5 µm. This is necessary to avoid the
transfer of abrasives and metal parts to the collection and reaction tank system. The system
is equipped with a self-cleaning back wash drum filter similar to the one showed below:

Backwash Drum Filter S

Depending on system / customer requirements (i.e. cleaning of circulation water, cleaning of

water before disposal) various types of filter types are available. Examples include:
- Bag Filter
- Rapid sand filter

The following criteria apply to the standard filter: selection

Filter ≥ 5 µm, abrasives, metal parts, organic particles (like
TNT and explosive derivatives),

Inlet / Outlet Pressure a wide range of pressure requirements can be met

with proper pump selection.
Flow rate 500 - 900 l/h.

2.3.2 UV System

The water in the collection tank will be processed through the UV Reactor to reduce the
organic load, primarily the explosive components.
The treatment occurs in several process steps. A PLC controls the system to maintain
operating parameters in an optimum operating range. Parameters such as pH, temperatures
and process cycles are maintained to reduction up to 80% of the organic load. The picture
shows the basic type of compact mobile unit.

2.4 Installation Requirements

The standard package requires is placement in a dry place (non-ATEX zone). However the
unit can be weatherized to meet the customers’ requirements (can require additional cost).

Required space: Approximately 50 m2

UV / Peroxide reactor: 3x6m
Tank: 2 x 4 m
Total height: 5m
Access: Door approximately 3x3 m
Tanks: Will be placed on ground without skid.
Cabinet and PLC: Electrical cabinet will be placed on the ground with a steel base.
Cables will be inserted from bottom
Floor load: Engineering area: 0,4 t/m2.
Load below tanks: > 2 t/m2.
ATEX: Unit is non-ATEX; surrounding at client is non-ATEX
Electrical coordinates: 400 V / 3PE / 50 Hz (internal main switch for ca. 15 kW);
Control voltage: separate by client: 230 V, 1PNE, 50 Hz
External Utilities: Decontamination showers and eyewash stations shall be installed
in the vicinity based on local safety regulations.
Ventilation: To prevent and for safety concerns the room containing the system
must be well ventilated. The room air should be exchanged at a
rate of approximately once per hour. This helps to prevent
corrosion by condensation and chemicals and ensures any vapor
are properly swept clear of the operating area.
Temperature: 5°C - 30°C.
