What is it:

Q1. Features of Ocean Basin :

1.Mid Ocean Ridge-it is found at the center of the ocean basins where new ocean floor is created as the Earth’s tectonic
plates spread apart

2.Ocean Trenches-these are the deepest part of the oceans.

3.Abyssal Plain/Hill-they are found on the deep ocean floor .Abyssal hill are some small features while abyssal plain is
flat because it has been washed away.

4.Sea mounts- a very large volcanic mountain that is submerged under the surface of the ocean.

5.Guyot – It is a volcanic mountain with a flat top

6. Continental Rise- a slope between the continental slope and the abyssal plain

7.Continental Shelf- a shallow gently sloping part of the continental crust

8.Continental Slope- is a slope between the outer edge of the continental shelf and deep ocean floor.

Q2. The ocean basins constitute one of the two major topographic features of Earth's surface, the other being
continents .Yet, they all contain certain common features such as oceanic ridges, trenches, and fracture zones and crack,
abyssal plains and hills, seamounts and guyots.

What’s New :Learning Activity

Picture of drawing

Q1. Mapping the seafloor is a lot more difficult and challenging ,it is because we do not use the same techniques that we
would use on land. To map the deep ocean, we use a tool called a multibeam echo-sounder, which is attached to a ship
or a submarine vessel.

Q2. The Technology facilitate the mapping and obtaining relevant information of the depth of water in ocean, seas, lakes
and rivers by involving the inventions of what the world are creating .Those inventions allows the people to safely and
efficiently explore different water bodies specially the ocean.

What I Have Learned:

Q1: .Mid Ocean Ridge-it is found at the center of the ocean basins where new ocean floor is created as the Earth’s
tectonic plates spread apart

Q2. I think all ocean basins have the same physical features because they have common features such as oceanic ridges,
trenches, and fracture zones and cracks, abyssal plains and hills, seamounts and guyots. Oceans may be located in
different locations but they have the same features because they are under or below land .Just like volcanos ,they may
be in a different locations but they still have the same features.

Q3.Mapping the ocean floor is quite difficult despite of having a vast information and technological advancement
because it is very time consuming ,costly and the tools that are used are different compared to the tools that are used in
land.

LESSON 2:THE EVOLUTION OF OCEAN BASINS

WHAT ‘S NEW:

Ocean Basin Boundaries Continent Boundaries

1. Pacific Ocean 1. Asia

2. Atlantic Ocean 2. North America

3. Indian Ocean 3. South America

4. Southern Ocean 4. Europe

5.Arctic Ocean 5 Africa

WHAT’S MORE:
NORTH EUROPE
AMERICA
ASIA
WHAT I HAVE LEARNED:

1. PACIFIC – largest among all the ocean

2. ATLANTIC-second largest and the saltiest among
the oceans
3. INDIAN -third largest, it is relatively warm
compared to other oceans
4. ANTARCTIC-it is located in the southern part of
the Earth. It also joins the water of the Indian
Ocean, Pacific Ocean ,and Atlantic Ocean
5. ARCTIC -it is the shallowest and smallest ocean
located in the Northern Hemisphere.

What I Can Do
Q1. As plates converge, one plate may move
under the other causing earthquakes, forming
volcanoes, or creating deep ocean trenches.
Where plates diverge from each other, molten
magma flows upward between the plates,
forming mid-ocean ridges, underwater volcanoes,
hydrothermal vents, and new ocean floor crust.
AUSTRALIA AND
SOUTH AMERICA
AFRICA ANTARTICA OCEANA
2. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is a
huge crack or opening found in
the middle of the Atlantic ocean
floor, this is created by two
diverging oceanic plates, where
the ocean floor continuously
moving apart from each other.

The age of the rocks becomes

younger, as you move to nearer
to the ridge, because this is
where seafloor spreading is
happening, the magma will rise
up, to fill up the gap again, and
then it will cool down
afterwards, creating a young
ocean floor with young newly-
formed rocks.
3.The ocean basins are already
merged as one. Humans just
gave them boundaries.
