NES CLASS -8 PHYS MODULE

TOPIC – CHAP 3 ( FORCE AND PRESSURE-2 )

Moment of a force = force x perpendicular distance of force from the
point of rotation

UNIT OF MOMENT OF FORCE.

1. S I UNIT
newton x metre
2. C.G.S UNIT
dyne x cm
3. GRAVITATIONAL UNIT
Kg-f x metre

CONVERSION

1 Nm = 107 dyne x cm

1 kg-f xm = 10 Nm

SIGN CONVENTION OF MOMENT

1.If the effect of the body is to turn in anticlockwise, moment

of force is called anticlockwise moment and it is taken positive.

2.If the effect of the body is to turn it clockwise the moment

of force is called clockwise moment and it is taken negative.

MOMENT OF FORCE ABOUT A POINT IS ALSO KNOWN AS

TORQUE.

IT CAUSES TURNING EFFECT IN A BODY.

EXAMPLES OF MOMENT OF FORCE.

1) to open and shut the door we apply Air Force which is

normal to the door at its handle which is provided at the
maximum distance

you can noticed that the force which we apply is much greater
than the force which is required to open the door at the
Hinges rather than on the handle itself hence the moment of
force is executed here. since the handle is provided at the
maximum distance from the door there we require much less
force to open the door.
2) the upper circulars stone of a hard floor grinder is
provided with a handle near its him that is at the maximum
distance from the centre so that it can easily be rotated
about the iron pivot at its centre by applying a small force at
the handle.

3) for turning of steering wheel a force is applied tangentially

on the rim of the wheel. the sense of rotation of wheel is
changed by changing the point of application of force without
changing the direction of force.
