QUTB MINAR

tower" that forms part of the Qutb complex.
• It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Mehrauli area of New Delhi, India.
• It is one of most visited tourist spots in the city due to it being one of the earliest that
survives in the Indian subcontinent.

Plaque at Minar
• Built in the early 13th century a few kilometers south of Delhi, the red sandstone tower of Qutb Minar

H I S TO RY: -
• The Qutb Minar was built over the ruins of the Lal Kot, the citadel of Dhillika.

• The Minar is surrounded by several historically significant monuments of the Qutb complex.
• It consists of a rectangular courtyard enclosed by cloisters, erected with the carved columns and architectural members of 27 Hindu and
Jaina temples, which were demolished by Qutub -ud-Din Aibak as recorded in his inscription on the main eastern entrance.

• Pesrian-Arabic and Nagari in different sections of the Qutb Minar reveal the history of its construction and the
l a te r r e s to r a ti o n s a n d r e p a i r s b y F i r o z Sh a h Tu g h l u q ( 1 3 5 1 – 8 8 ) a n d Si k a n d a r L o d i ( 1 4 8 9 – 1 5 1 7 ).
• The height of Qutb Minar is 72.5 meters, making it the tallest minaret in the world built of bricks.
• T h e t o w e r t a p e r s , a n d h a s a 1 4 . 3 m e t e r s ( 4 7 f e e t ) b a s e d i a m e t e r, r e d u c i n g t o 2 . 7 m e t e r s ( 9 f e e t ) a t t h e t o p o f
the peak.
• It contains a spiral staircase of 379 steps.
• Qutb Minar was an inspiration and prototype for many minarets and towers built.
• The chief material used is red sandstone. Four balconies separate its five storeys, and a beautiful effect is
achieved in the lower three storeys which have broad carved bands of interwoven calligraphy and floral motifs.
