Course Description:
Mission of this class:
To discover the profoundly generous truth of Shakespeare’s humanity that will lead to the realization
of the vital need for his vision in our modern world and to excite the student to uncover the richness of
Shakespeare’s language and words. It strives to make the student aware that Shakespeare’s works
offer us hope, guidance, and courage and that the music of his poetry resonates with the beating of the
heart.
Methods Used to Fulfill this Mission:
1. Deepening analytical and interpretive skills to uncover the meaning of Shakespeare’s sonnets
2. Concentrating on the communication of subtext through the specificity of subtle physical movements
and vocal changes of tonality, pace, pitch etc. This means working on technique that masters craft thereby
enabling actors to tap into their emotional truth
3. Using the sonnets as inspiration for the the students to devise their own work
4. Enhancing discipline and time management skills for a professional career by insisting that the students
set their own schedules for working. NO SCHEDULES are set by the teacher for when the students
work. The students who work, work! Those who don’t, don’t.
5. Guiding the students to define their own philosophical and artistic vision; specifically by examining
our present day society through honest and courageous debate inspired by the students’ original works
using the words of Shakespeare
Content:
1. Personal poems analyzing text
2. 5 Act play
3. Voice/Speech/Movement exercises that support and enhance text targeting Shakespeare’s words and
the music of his poetry ( Iambic sentence and scenario)
4. The intellectual, philosophical, and active examination of selected Shakespeare Sonnets: #s 23, 29, 30,
57, 129, 138, 147, targeting the use of words and the emotions beneath the words. (Active student
analysis and commentary)
5. Creating modern scenarios for the sonnets so that they are not monologues but scenes
6. Acting class work on sonnets within the context of the devised scene
7. Composing or selecting music for the sonnet scenes (specifics to follow)
Learning Objectives
A practical understanding of all that is described in the course overview plus the development of
professional work habits

1.confidence in expressing opinions honestly and generously on the issues of today through the lens of
the student’s emerging artistic voice
2. foundational mastery in the craft of acting in the language of Shakespeare and in the use of subtext

Learning in class depends on the layering of intellectual and emotional discovery resulting from the
consistent active exploration of 100% of the BA 354 Ensemble. Absences and tardies erode the trust of
the ensemble. Therefore, any absences or tardies will negatively impact the student’s ability to
participate in future active exploration in class
Course Notes:
Any communication between faculty and students that is needed to clarify information imparted in class
or that serves as a reminder for assignment deadlines will be done via email or direct contact with me.

talent. or artistic preference.

 Constructive feedback of classmates’ acting presentations and perceptible support of classmates work i.e.
meeting a professional standard of behavior in class and rehearsals
 Willingness to experiment and apply the constructive feedback of instructor and students
 Meeting all assignment deadlines: reading, writing, acting
Memorization of lines
IMPORTANT:
If you are training to be an actor or are exploring the acting profession as a possibility for post
university life, you will soon realize that rehearsal and work outside of class is crucial. BE
ADVISED!

Grading Scale
The final course grade is determined according to the following scale:
Excellent: A (4) = 100-96; A- (3.7) = 95-90 (clear understanding of class material coupled with original and
creative insight)
Good: B+ (3.3) = 89-86; B (3) = 85-84; B- (2.7) = 83-80 (class material has been understood clearly)
Average: C+ (2.3) = 79-76; C (2) = 75-74; C- (1.7) = 73-70 (class material has been generally understood, but gaps
in understanding remain)
Poor: D (.7-1.3) = 60’s (identifiable gaps in the understanding of class material)
Fail: F (0) = 59 and below (gaps in completion of work coupled with poor understanding of class material
Grading Timeline:As soon as humanly possible with the understanding that feedback is most valuable if
work being assessed is fresh in the mind of the student. I will be happy to discuss your work at any time.

Students must place all extraneous belongings, (backpacks, jackets, skateboards, laptops, cell
phones, etc.) in the designated corner of the classroom(the Crap Corner) at the start of class

class, 9AM. NO FLIP FLOPS UNLESS THE SCENE/CLASS TAKES PLACE AT THE BEACH!

Health and Participation in Class

You are expected to complete your Trojan Check screener daily and, as your instructor, I may ask you to show your daily screening
in class. Your health and safety, and the health and safety of your peers, are my top priorities. If you are experiencing any
symptoms of COVID-19, or if you discover that you have been in close contact with others who have symptoms or who have tested
positive, you must follow the instructions on Trojan Check. My hope is that if you are feeling ill or if you have been exposed to
someone with the virus, you will stay home to protect others. I will ensure that you can continue to participate in class remotely so
that your education is not disrupted.

To reduce the spread of COVID-19, USC requires that face coverings (masks) be worn indoors including in classrooms. Face
coverings must cover your nose and mouth and be worn throughout the class session. A mask with a valve is not considered an
adequate face covering and should not be used, as it can expel exhaled air, increasing the risk to others. Eating or drinking during
class is prohibited because of the risk posed by removing your mask for these activities. Failure to comply with these requirements
will result in your being asked to leave the classroom immediately. Requests for accommodations related to the face covering and
