2 Release Info Tekla Structures 20.1

Tekla Structures 20.1
General

New notebox
In this Release Info will we use a new type of notebox with a specific picture and a
clarification to indicate that this subject is about settings you might have saved in
earlier Tekla Structures versions. These could be files in your model templates
and/or ts folder. These files have to be updated in Tekla Structures 20.1:

Clarification
Filename: Name of the file or extension.

Compatibility
Tekla Structures 20.1 is an intermediate version, and contains many new features
and fixes. Tekla Structures 20.1 is compatible with all previous versions.

You can open and edit existing models in Tekla Structures 20.0 but
we suggest that you complete any models you have started using
your current version.

In case you still open existing models created in an older version in Tekla
Structures 20.1, note the following issues:
• Plugins can be combined causing only Tekla plugins available.
• To avoid conversion problems, always open a model created with an
older version of Tekla Structures as a single-user model first.
• We recommend that you always check that custom components created
in older versions work correctly in the new version of Tekla Structures.
When you open custom components made with an older version of
Tekla Structures in the Custom component editor, and the new version
contains improvements requiring update, Tekla Structures asks whether
you want to update the component. If you do not update the component,
it works in the same manner as in the version where it was originally
made, but you do not gain the benefits of the improvements. If you
choose to update the component, you need to check and sometimes
even recreate dimensions depending on the improvements. When you
delete a dimension and create a new one (even with the same name),
also the equations containing the dimension need to be edited, because
the dependency created by the equation is lost when a dimension is
deleted. You can recreate the dimensions and edit the equations easily
in the Custom component editor.

When you save a model in Tekla Structures 20.1, you can open it in
Tekla Structures 20.0, but not in older versions of Tekla Structures.

Installing Tekla Structures setup creates a new subfolder for Tekla Structures 20.1.
You need Windows Administrator rights to install Tekla Structures 20.1. This
ensures that all Windows system folder *.dll files are updated.
Tekla Structures 20.1 uses .NET Framework 4.5.1, which will be installed on the
computer together with Tekla Structures if it is not already installed. .NET
Framework 4.5.1 can also be installed from Microsoft Download Center, click here.

Release Info Tekla Structures 20.1 3

License Tekla Structures 20.1 does not require a new license in case you are already
working with Tekla Structures 20.0. In all other cases you need to request for a
new license. Also previous on FlexNet based Tekla Structures versions (12.0 until
20.0) run on the Tekla Structures 20.1 license.
A new entitlement can be requested by mail: administratie@construsoft.com.
Licenseserver A new License Administration Tool version 20.1 is available. If you a currently
using version 20.0, there is no need to install License Administration Tool version
20.1. You must use the latest License Administration Tool version 20.1 if you work
with an older version then version 20.0.

Deactivating license(s):
NEVER click Cancel during activating or deactivating, due to this the
licenses might get lost and Tekla Structures will run anymore.
Activating/deactivating can sometimes take up to 10 minutes.

Toolbars Recreate toolbars in case red crosses appear as a pictogram in toolbars you took
from an older version.
Release Notes You can find the Tekla Structures 20.1 Release Notes here.

Compatibility of Tekla Structures

Tekla Structures 20.1 is compatible with Windows 8 and Windows 7.
Because Windows Vista and Windows XP are not supported, we suggest in case
you are using a workstation with Windows Vista or Windows XP as operating
system, to upgrade your workstation to Windows 7 or Windows 8 as soon as
possible.

Since April 8th 2014, Microsoft stopped supporting Windows XP. The general
advice was not to use Windows XP after April 8th.
The end of support for Windows XP actually means the end of updates and even
security updates. If there are leaks found, you are so unlucky; there is no patch.
Windows XP will become increasingly less secure. It may be that things are not
going so gradually. Developers of malware love these outdated software and the
more people are using an outdated program, the more attractive they find it!
You can choose to upgrade from XP to 7 or 8 if your hardware supports a newer
operating system. You can check this by downloading and running the Windows 8
Upgrade Assistant.

If you use a 64-bit version of Windows, we recommend that you

install the 64-bit version of Tekla Structures using the memory in the
hardware and the operating system optimal.
The 32-bit version of Tekla Structures also runs under the 64-bit
version of Windows, but it will be carried out in the 32-bit mode. This
means that a maximum of 4 GB of internal memory can be freed up
for Tekla Structures. Tekla Structures 20.1 does not support
Windows Vista, XP, 95, 98, ME, NT, or 2000.
Construsoft advises to use a 64-bit version of Windows.

New sub-super-assembly-list
Tekla Structures 20.1 includes a new list sub-super-assembly-list in the
configuration Steel Detailer:

Holes and recesses in reports and templates

Holes and recesses are always attached to a part, just like bolts and reinforcement
bars.

Now it is possible to create a report or a template listing all the holes and recesses,
or the part that is removed as a result of a cut.
Attribute ANTIMATERIAL was added as a new content type.

Release Info Tekla Structures 20.1 11

In the Template Editor, the same attributes that are available for PART are
available for ANTIMATERIAL. However, only the attributes that are useful to be
used with ANTIMATERIAL are shown, including NAME , LENGTH , WIDTH ,
HEIGHT , AREA , PROFILE and NUMBER , and user-defined attributes.
The objects created with the commands Cut Part > With Polygon and Cut Part >

Modeling

New copying command

Tekla Structures 20.1 introduces the new command Copy Special > All Content
to Another Object that you can use to copy objects between assemblies or cast
units in the model. The new command is available on the Edit menu, and on the
pop-up menu when you have an assembly or a cast unit selected.

For example, you can use the new Copy Special > All Content to Another
Object command when you have detailed an assembly and want to copy all
details to another similar assembly.
When you use this command, you do not need to select each individual object to
copy, but you just select the source assembly or cast unit, and then the target
assembly or cast unit.
Tekla Structures copies the following objects in the assembly or cast unit:
• Secondary parts
• Reinforcement, bolts, and welds
• Cuts, fittings, and edge chamfers
• Sub-assemblies
• Components

Tekla Structures does not copy pour breaks, or secondary parts

created by a component that has also created the component main
part.

Tekla Structures includes the advanced option
XS_DUPLICATE_CHECK_LIMIT_FOR_COPY_AND_MOVE in the category Modeling
Properties (Tools > Options> Advanced options) to define the maximum
number of objects that are checked for duplicates while copying or moving objects.

If the selection contains more objects then the defined value, Tekla Structures
does not check for duplicates. Enter an integer value. The default value is 100.
This advanced option is user-specific and the setting is saved in the file
options.bin in the folder ..\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Tekla
Structures\<version>\UserSettings
Restart Tekla Structures to activate the new value.
If the advanced option is set to 0, the functionality is switched off.

Improvements in construction circles
The performance of construction circles has been improved. Even using large
construction circles is now fast and accurate.

Construction circles are now shown with a continuous line in model views, not with
a dashed and polygonal line as previously. Now it is also accurate to snap to
construction circles, as they are true circles.

Improvements in the hierarchy of reference models

Now the reference models have same kinds of a hierarchy as the Tekla Structures
native model objects.
It is possible to select several hierarchy levels, like building or storey, and view
their native attributes and properties, and view and modify their properties added
in Tekla Structures.
See also For more detailed information about the hierarchy of reference models, click here.

Contour plate orientation

When modeling contour plates, the shape of these kinds of plates is always
determined by the points you pick, the yellow point is the first point you pick,
followed by multiple magenta-colored points:

You can set the contour plate main axis to follow the line created by the first and
second points you pick. This enables you to manually define the plate orientation
in drawings and reports.

18 Release Info Tekla Structures 20.1

To define the contour plate orientation with first and second picked points:
1. Create the contour plate. The first and second points you pick also define the
plate’s main axis.

behind the scenes so that the anchors will appear on the list.
Using this list requires an internet connection to display the pictures in the list from
a server.

The pictures will be missing on the list in case that there is no internet connection.

Plugins

Pile Foundation (d001)

Defining the length of the pile is changed in plugin Pile Foundation (d001).
Instead of defining a (positive) length for the pile, you now have to define the pile
bottom point. For pile bottom points under the model’s 0-punt or (depending on the
setting Model/UDA) N.A.P. (Normaal Amsterdams Peil) this will mostly be a
negative value. A positive value is also possible.

There is also an option available to define the rotation of the piles: in the direction
of the beam (1) or relative to the global x- or y-axis (2):

Customer setting needs to be updated!

Wall Slab Connection (m062)
Plugin Wall Slab Connection (m062) is now modified. The plugin now also
recognizes other connection-planes instead of only the top plane of a panel. This
means that you can also use the plugin for the connection between hollow core
slabs and L- or T-beams:

Extensions

Print Drawings to PDF

In Tekla Structures you can use the extension Print Drawings to PDF to export
drawings to a PDF file. Because of this there is no need for a separate PDF-printer
on your computer anymore.
You are able to export to 1 pdf per drawing but you can also export multiple
drawings to 1 pdf.
You can download the extension Print Drawings to PDF from the Tekla Extranet.

Extensions are third party applications. This means that Construsoft cannot
support these extensions. Mind that extensions are very often available for
multiple Tekla Structures-versions.
Basically extensions have the status Experimental and they can be used by
everyone in Tekla Structures. Once an extension is also tested by Tekla and found
correct, then the status will change into Tekla approved.

Macros

New macro Modify Selected Connections

Tekla Structures 20.1 now includes macro CS_Modify_Selected_Connections to
recalculate selected connections by using their individual setting.
Suppose, you have modelled an integrated connection, so for example a column
with a footplate and anchors, modelled by using system component Footplate
(1029) and you have connected the windbrace by using system component
Bolted gusset (11):

Next, in system component Footplate (1029) the thickness of the footplate is mod-
ified. As a result of this modification, the gussetplate and the footplate collide:

You can use macro CS_Modify_Selected_Connections to recalculate system

component Bolted gusset (11) to adapt the gussetplate to the modified footplate.

48 Release Info Tekla Structures 20.1

To run the macro:
1. Click Tools > Macros... to open the Macros dialog box.
2. Select the system component(s) you want to recalculate, in this case system
component Bolted gusset (11):

3. Select macro CS_Modify_Selected_Connections and click Run. System

component Bolted gusset (11) is now recalculated and adapted to the foot-
plate:

You can also manually recalculate these components in Tekla Structures. For that,
you need to double-click on the system component’s symbol to open the
properties dialog box. Next you must click the button Modify to recalculate the
component:

This is not really a problem in case you have only a few components. If the model
contains many components and if they are spread all over the model, it can be
quite a job.

Visibility of reference models in drawings

The advanced option XS_SHOW_REFERENCE_MODEL_HIDDEN_LINES is set to
TRUE in Tekla Structures 20.1 again.
You can use this advanced option to display or hide the reference models hidden
lines in drawings. When you set the advanced option to TRUE (default), reference
model lines are never hidden by other object. To hide hidden lines, enter FALSE.
Use this advanced option combined with some more advanced options to set the
visibility of lines and hidden lines of reference models in drawings.
Below you can see an example of a displayed reference model in a GA-drawing
and you can see the effect for some advanced options regarding to the visibility.

Files in Tekla Structures 20.1

Updating settings
As you know, you can cut and paste all customer settings (saved by default in the
model folder) from the model folder to the folder ts.
Because of this, the customer settings are only located in the folder ts and after
restarting Tekla Structures, these settings are available in all models. This goes for
all files except the file dim_planes_table.txt.
During the installation of a new Tekla Structures-version, all folders except the
folder ts are updated by Construsoft. Construsoft always includes the most actual
files in these folders per version.
The advice is not to modify these updated folders (such as profil and system)
but only in the folder ts.
Files which have been supplied by Construsoft in previous versions and who were
copied to the folder ts (no matter if was meant or if it was not meant), can be
deleted.
You can check the date of the files to find out if these files were supplied by
Construsoft or if the files were creates or modified by yourself. Construsoft always
uses a specific date and time for the supplied files!

Version Date Version Date

8.1 3-2-2003 13.1 3-12-2007

were copied to the folder ts (no matter if was meant or if it was not meant), can be
deleted.
You must check and update the files in the folder ts by yourself for the new
version, because settings can differ per version, e.g. when new fields or User
Defined Attributes are added!
