 Bridge inspection
• A bridge is expected to be in good condition during
the life span not to put users at risk when they
develop problems.
• The bridges need to inspected:
• Scouring
• Blockage
• Deterioration
• Bearing seats
• Joints
• Masonry works
• Cracks
 Bridge inspection
• Movement
• Spalling
Bridge replacement
Part of the bridge or bridge member may need to
be replaced.
The load that was initially supported by the
member is transferred to suitable position using
tension cables or brace for tension and
compression forces respectively.
 Bridge repair
Is a desirable extended maintenance program
that attempts to maintain bridge’s current
structural load classification.
Is based on the knowledge of the cause of a
deficiency and not its symptoms.
The repair work involves:
• Evaluation and identification of the causes for
the deficiency;
• Methods;
• Materials; and
• Plans to be used in the execution of the repair.
 Bridge upgrade
The processes of upgrading existing bridges are
required when the structure there are has a
higher load carrying capacity than the design
load.
It involves:
• Strengthening of the existing individual
components of the bridge to provide a moderate
increase of the bridge’s load carrying capacity;
• Redesigning the structure by adding
components (stringers, piers, load bearing decks,
etc.);

 Bridge upgrade
Re-designing the bridge’s structural system by
strengthening the existing components by adding
new components so as to increase the load
capacity.
