Therapeutic Modal: Automatic Rotating Pronation Beds

Introduction

Healthcare services are critical for ensuring improved health and wellbeing of

populations. Healthcare modalities and technologies have been used for delivering high-quality

care. One such therapeutic modality is the automatic rotating pronation beds that have been

essential for the same purpose. The therapeutic modality is essential for helping patients who

experience critical illness and may be unable to move. It may be used for placing patients with

conditions like respiratory distress syndrome in a good position to receive care (Akatsuka et al.,

2020). Besides, automatic rotating pronation beds employ kinetic therapy, enabling the

caregivers to rotate the individual receiving care from one side to another. There is a need to

adequately train the individuals giving the care to fully implement the therapeutic modality. For

instance, during the peak of COVID 19 in May 2020, my uncle was among the victims, and he

became critically. When he was taken to the hospital, he was diagnosed with Acute respiratory

distress syndrome (ARDS) and was placed on the automatic rotating pronation bed until his

condition improved. As a family, we were informed that the bed would improve blood

oxygenation, hence quick recovery. This paper will examine the use of the automatic rotating

pronation beds in providing care to critically ill patients and the essential roles and

responsibilities of the healthcare professionals in using them.

Explanation and Background

The therapeutic modality employs kinetic therapy, enabling healthcare providers to

ensure that they can increase oxygenation for individuals with a critical illness. According to

Gattinoni et al. (2019), the technology can be used for individuals who have been affected by

respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). The condition has various underlying issues and maybe a

problem for individuals admitted to the ICU. The strategy has been used in more than fifty-one

cities in the US and the neighbouring region. Healthcare providers have been able to rent the

therapeutic modality and help with improving healthcare quality and delivery. Similarly,

automatic rotating pronation beds have been used to help people who have been affected by

severe lung injuries.

To promote the operations of the automatic rotating pronation beds, there is a need for

interconnecting them with the Arjo resource system. It will be helpful for patients with critical

illness or those who are unable to move. The modality is useful for those who have acute

respiratory distress syndrome. Lastly, it ensures improved safety for the individuals in critical

health conditions since it has safety standards to keep them in comfortable positions during

rotation for the blood oxygenation therapy. As such, it is a significant way of delivering safe

quality therapy to the critically ill. Regarding costs, automatic rotating pronation beds is

associated with significantly high costs for instance, it is estimated that staying in the bed for 24

hours may cost a minimum of $1000, which prohibits its accessibility to economically

challenged patients. The medication provided for patients on automatic rotating pronation beds

are mainly those aimed at improving blood oxygenation during the therapy. Besides, the

patients may receive medications as prescribed by their physician depending on the medical

condition.

Risks and Benefits

The automatic rotating pronation beds are essential for enhancing oxygenation levels for

individuals seeking care. This can be essential for decreasing the number of days that an

individual spends in the ICU. Notably, the modality can ensure lung ventilation; thus, reducing

inflammation and injuries that may affect the organ. The process is also critically important in

reducing the compression of the lungs (Rawal, Yadav & Kumar, 2018; St. John, 2021). The

modality can also play an essential role in ensuring that the prone therapies are conducted

effectively. It is the critical process for improving the drainage process for pulmonary secretion.

It is an essential step for improving positive outcomes, as it can be used to ensure improved

management of risks for the caregivers. Besides, it is essential for ensuring automatic

controlling of the therapy system. Healthcare providers may employ tube management

strategies in helping to deal with safety issues when rotation is being carried out (Kamo et al.,

2018). The therapy is essential for decreasing the incidences of death that may be experienced.

It is essential to note that there is a risk of cardiovascular issues like cardiac arrest when using

automatic rotating pronation beds. To prevent the possibility of this risk, there is a need for the

therapeutic modality to be used appropriately, especially by training the responsible staff

sufficiently on handling the modality as well as the patient when using it.

Interdisciplinary Team Members

Various healthcare providers are involved for the automatic rotating pronation beds to

be implemented effectively. They include respiratory therapists, assistive personnel, nurse

specialists, a team of researchers, and nurse managers. Using this technology, these team

members have a critically important role in improving healthcare quality. It is the responsibility

of the researchers to ensure that there is an appropriate design of therapeutic modality used in

increasing oxygenation levels for individuals seeking care. The respiratory therapist will ensure

effective delivery of prone services to people affected by ARDS in the healthcare facility. The

nurse managers will ensure that there are needed resources for the healthcare facility to function

effectively. The assistive personnel will offer needed help to the nurse managers. The nurse

specialists will offer care to patients affected by ARDS, ensuring that they adhere to the

therapy. Besides, they may administer drugs and care to the sick. One challenge working with

this team is that there may be a lack of clear goals and conflicting cultures. The team may not

get adequate training in interdisciplinary collaboration leading to serious problems affecting

information exchange within the team. As a result, there is a need for the team to deal with

these problems for them to be successful.

Nursing Scope of Practice

There is a need for RNs using the therapeutic modality to have adequate knowledge and

skills that may prove essential in delivering healthcare services. First, there is a need for

understanding the operation of the therapeutic modality, issues that may arise when using it and

how it benefits patients. There is a need for the RNs to have adequate communication and

critical thinking skills. They should also be culturally competent when giving care, which will

help them during the interprofessional collaboration. Cultural awareness may also help address

barriers that may arise when providing care to patients. Having adequate knowledge of the

working of the modality will be essential when dealing with patients experiencing critical

illness. Besides, there are also critical attitudes that healthcare providers must depict to ensure

high-quality care. In this regard, they have to ensure altruism, respect for human dignity,

integrity, and a high sense of professionalism. They must also be culturally competent to

provide care for people from different cultural backgrounds in the healthcare facility. These will

be critical for improving healthcare quality and addressing the patients' needs.

Patient Education

Individuals seeking care and their family members should be provided with critical

information on the therapeutic modality. As a result, healthcare providers' responsibility is to

ensure that they know the advantages and disadvantages associated with the therapeutic

modality. Besides, they will also know the operation strategy and the treatment modality's risks.

The information should be disseminated when the healthcare providers are implementing the

therapy. Besides, healthcare providers may employ different dissemination methods like

patients' portals, social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube), and

handouts. These can be used for disseminating information to the patients effectively. There is a

need to put cultural issues into perspective during the teaching process. For instance, the

educator will consider the language barrier the main issue. Notably, educators will deal with

patients from diverse backgrounds, including non-English speaking. As such, there is a need to

be culturally competent and have knowledge of the target language or seek the services of a

medical interpreter. The educator will have authentic materials and work to prevent interference

from the native culture. It is essential when handling sensitive topics. It is essential to note that

different strategies may evaluate if the information reached the patients and their family

members effectively. These include observations, interviewing patients, and conducting

surveys. The response will help determine if the information has been effective. The

information gained and awareness on the automatic rotating pronation beds during the patient

education will be determined.

Conclusion

In summary, automatic rotating pronation beds employ kinetic therapy, which is

essential for turning patients into critical conditions due to chronic illnesses. Notably, it is

essential to understand the risks and benefits of the modality by responsible healthcare
AUTOMATIC ROTATING PRONATION BEDS 7

professionals to improve effectiveness and quality care delivery. This can be achieved through

training. The modality mainly applies when dealing with ARDS patients, increasing their

oxygenation level. However, it is noteworthy that the technology has serious complications like

cardiac arrest/collapse, hence proper training. There is also a need for the involvement of the

interprofessional team members in delivering high-quality care. They should have adequate

knowledge, skills, and attitudes to achieve this. Besides, healthcare professionals should be

culturally competent to ensure equity and inclusion given the diversity of patients. Patients and

their families should be furnished with essential information regarding the therapeutic modal

using various platforms to enhance their knowledge. Additional resources for learning more

about this modality (automatic rotating pronation beds) have been included under references.
