INTRODUCTION.
Carlos Bulusan wrote the book Father Goes To Court. It was about the lives of the two
separate families and how they live together. The narrator's family was a poor one. On the one
hand, the impoverished family is happy and healthy, but the wealthy family has no social life.
The story takes place in a Philippine city. First, the narrator describes his enormous family. They
are full of mischief and laughter despite their poverty. Despite the fact that they are frequently
hungry, they are all strong and healthy. The wealthy children, on the other hand, are thin and
sickly despite being fed a lot of nice food, which their neighbors love sniffing over the fence.
As a result, the rich guy accuses the narrator's family of stealing his food's spirit. Then
the case is taken to court. In court, the father promises to repay the wealthy neighbor. He
accomplishes this by collecting coins from all of his buddies in attendance. After that, he rattles
the coins-filled hat. He claims that the jingling of the coins is a fair parallel to being paid to pay
for the spirit of food that his family reportedly gained from its fragrance. The rich guy is forced
to leave with only the "spirit" of the money the poor man collected, and the judge finds in favor
of the poor father.
Despite the rich man's nonsensical accusations, the impoverished father played a decent
and respectable role in the courtroom, and he just seems to be enjoying himself while the hearing
is going on.

CHARACTERS.
The Narrator - he is one of the children of the farmer/farm owner.
The Father/Farmer(?)/Farm Owner - the father of the narrator. Since it was mentioned in the
story that he owned a farm, I might refer to him as the farmer or farm owner, to avoid confusion.
Mother- the wife of the Farmer/Farm Owner.
The Children of the Farmer (?) - the siblings of the narrator. They were referred to as strong,
robust, and cheerful. They were accused of stealing the spirit of the food which was prepared for
the rich man's children.
The Rich Man- the neighbor of the narrator when they moved to town. Described as someone
who is not sociable, especially to those who has a lower status in life than him. It is implied in
the story that he is also stupid. He accused the family of the narrator of stealing the spirit of the
food which his servants prepared.
The Judge - the one who is in charge of the case filed by the rich man. He was described as
someone who is old-looking.
The Rich Man's Children- described as thin, anaemic, and pale.
Servants of the Rich Man- the ones who are preparing food for the rich man's family.
SETTING.
 The Story was set several years after 1918, in a town.
 The events occurred in their neighbourhood, and the trial was head in a court in their
locality.

PLOT.
They moved into a town after getting their farm destroyed by a flood. They moved near the
house of rich man, who doesn’t interact with his neighbors much.
They always unintentionally smell the rich aroma of those food their neighbor’s maids are
cooking.

CONFLICT.
The conflict in the story occurred when the richman accused the poor father of stealing the spirit
of their family's wealth and food.

POINT OF VIEW.
About the poor family stealing the spirit of food of the rich family and the narrator's father agrees
to payback the rich

SYMBOL.
For me, one of the symbols in the story is the difference in status between the two families in
life; it showed how the poor family and the rich family lived their lives and how different they
were; in the story, the poor family is happy and healthy, whereas the rich family is unhappy and
unhealthy, which we can all relate to in real life because we all know that money can't buy
happiness. Another symbolism I found in the story was the spirit of wealth and food, as well as
the sound of coins falling down. The spirit of wealth and food symbolizes the poor family's
wealth in happiness and health, while the sound of coins falling down symbolizes the poor
family's wealth in happiness and health.

THEME.
The story's theme is about one's social standing and how it might influence one's personality.
CONCLUSION.
The poor father payback the rich man after being accused stealing.
