Liquefaction Process
HOME / LIQUEFACTION PROCESS
The first and foremost step for the liquefaction of LNG is to ensure the cleaning and drying of the raw feed
gas that arrives from a gas producing field. It undergoes a treatment process in which mainly two natural
gas contaminants, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide are removed.
Following this process, the gas is allowed to cool in order to make sure that the water gets condensed. It is
then dehydrated in order to ensure the removal of even a small possible amount of water vapor in it. It is
essential to ensure that the gas is clean, dry and has been filtered before the liquefaction process. The gas
should primarily contain methane along with a little amount of light hydrocarbons in order to ensure
efficiency in the respective process
Cooling of gas is done by using heat exchangers for carrying out the liquefaction process. The gas in these
vessels which is circulating through the aluminium tube coils is then exposed to a compressed hydrocarbon-
nitrogen refrigerant. As soon as the refrigerant evaporates, heat transfer is attained. This also results in
cooling the gas in the respective tubes itself before it reaches back to the compressor. The liquified gas is
kept and stored in an insulated storage tank until it needs to be loaded to a tanker.
Given below are some of the benefits acquired from storing LNG :-
The consumption needs with respect to the coldest days of winter as well as the seasonal demands
for gas are well served with the help of storing LNG.
The ability of LNG to be regasified and delivered (even in large amounts) on short notice to various
regional distributions is also possible due to the invaluable facilities with respect to the storage of
LNG.
