APPENDIXB-TESTING CLUTCHPRESSURES

Testing individual clutch pressureswill help to determineif a transmissionmalfunction is due to a mechanicalor

an electrical problem. Properly making thesepressuretestswill require transmissionand vehicle (or test stand)
preparation,recordingofdata and comparingrecordeddataagainstspecificationsprovided.Theseinstructionsare
for all MD/HDiB Seriestransmissions.

NOTE: Determine whether there are diagnostic codesset which ure related to the trunsmission dfficalty you
are evaluating. Proceed to make mechanical preparatinns for checking clutch pressures after codes
havejirst been evuluated

A. Tfansmission and Vehicle Preparation

l. Removethe plugs from the pressuretap locationswhere measurementis desired(refer to

FigureB-l).

FigureB-1. Clutch PressureCheckPoints

Be sure that the hydraulic fiUings have the same thread as the plugs removed
CAUTION: (7A;-ZOUNF-2A). Also pleasenote that thesefittings must be straightthread,O-ring style.
Failure to do this will result in damageto the control module.

2. Install hydraulic fittings suitablefor attachingpressuregaugesor transducers.

3 . Connectpressuregaugesor transducers.Pressuregaugeset J 26417-A is availablefor this
purpose.Refer to TableB-2 for pressurelevels expected.
4. Determinethat enginespeedcan be monitored(Allison DOCrM For PC-Service Tool may be used
for this purpose).
5 . Be surethat transmissionsump fluid temperaturecan be measured.(Allison DOCrM For PC-
ServiceTool may be usedfor this purpose.)

6. Be surethat the transmissionhas enoughfluid for cold operationuntil an operatingtemperature

fluid level can be set.
7. Bring the transmissionto normal operatingtemperatureof 7l-93oC (160-200"F). Look for fluid
leaksin the addedpressuregauge/transducer lines. Repair leaks as needed.Be surethat fluid level
is correct.
B. Recording Data

l. Use the Allison DOCrM For PC-Service Tool, which allows checkingof individual rangeclutch
pressures,with the vehicle stationary.ConsultAppendix N or Allison publication GN3433EN,
User Guide for Allison DOCrM For PC-Service Tool, for Action Requestand selectClutch Test
Mode. Follow instructionsto check clutch pressuresin individual ranges.

NOTE: Determine the lockup clatch pressure by driving the vehicle in a range in which lockup can be
obtained Record the pressare valaes at the engine speedand sumpfluid temperature values shown in
Table B-1. The lockup clatch isfancfioning correctly when engine speedand turbine speedvalues are
eqaal as recordedfrom the Allison DOCN For PC-9ervice TooL
2. Consult Table B-1 and locatethe transmissionmodel that you are testing.
3. Operatethe transmissionat the conditions shown in Table B-1 and record enginespeed,
transmissionsumpfluid temperature, main hydraulic pressure, and clutch pressuresin the ranges
where a problem is suspected.

C. Comparing Recorded Data to Specifications

l. Be surethat enginespeedand transmissionsump fluid temperatureswere within the values

specifiedin Table B-1.
2. Comparethe main pressureand clutch pressuredata, recordedin StepB, with the specificationsin
TableB-2.
3. If clutch pressuresare within specifications, return the transmissionand vehicle to their original
configuration and proceedwith electricaltroubleshooting.
4. If clutch pressuresare not within specification, take correctiveaction to replacethe internal parts
of the transmissionnecessaryto correctthe problem. (Refer to the appropriatetransmission
servicemanual for the model being serviced.)
5. Recheckpressurevaluesafter the transmissionhasbeenrepaired.
6. Returnthe transmissionto its original configuration.Removeinstrumentationand install any
componentspreviously removedfor pressuretesting.
