1. Principle of the biological waste air purification

The biological waste air purification is based on the ability of micro-organisms to

biochemically oxidise certain inorganic and organic compounds.
The oxidation products resulting from the biological conversion processes (biomass, CO2,
H2O, salts, etc.) are environmentally safe.
During the oxidation of sulphur-containing substances, for example, sulphur or sulphuric
acid are created depending on the oxygen available. To a certain extent the oxidation
process is controllable with regard to the oxidation product.
In principle, the biological waste air purification is linked to the following requirements:

- biodegradability of the pollutants

- sufficient concentration of pollutant-reducing microorganisms inside the
bioreactor
- sufficient oxygen and nutrient supply for the microorganisms
- defined process prerequisites (humidity, temperature, pH value etc.)
- subcritical concentration of inhibitors/ toxic substances in the exhaust air/
waste gas flow.

To ensure a high density of microorganisms in the bioreactors, the latter are always filled
with substrates for immobilising the microorganisms.

Natural substances (peat, compost, bark mulch, hackled heather, hackled timber chips,
etc.) or packing made of plastics, ceramic, porcelain or the like serve as substrates.
Depending on the aquifer system, the biochemical pollutant degradation can be performed
in bio-filters, bio-scrubbers or biological trickle-bed reactor systems.

Inside the biofilter, the exhaust air to be purified flows through wet packing (normally
natural materials) colonized with micro-organisms, which at the same time provides the
nutrients for the micro-organisms. The exhaust air must be saturated with water vapour. If
that is not provided through the way the exhaust air is generated, either a humidification
process of the exhaust air must take place before the biofilter or the filter material must be
equipped with a sprinkling device. Both apply here.

Inside the biofilter, the pollutant components are sorbed and then microbially decomposed.
Bio-filters are primarily used for odour reduction of slightly charged exhaust air or for
degradation of poorly water-soluble pollutants.

2. General functional description of the biofilter system

The purpose of the plant is to reduce the amount of odor intensive organic and inorganic
substances (particularly hydrogen sulfide - H2S and ammonia – NH3 from the exhaust air
volume flow of the sewage treatment plant Kheibar.

For the dimensioning of the waste air purification plant, the following maximum
concentration values and pollutants mentioned below have been assumed.

The exhaust air volume flow is characterized as follows:

a) Substance data:

- Volume flow: maximum 500 Bm3/h

o
- Temperature: ≥ 10 C
- Moisture content: ≥ 50% (rel. humidity)

b) Exhaust air contents:

- Oxygen: 19-21 Vol-%

- H2S: max. mixed air (peak values) ≤ 5 ppm
- NH3: max. mixed air (peak values) ≤ 3 ppm.

Due to the air-like oxygen content of the gas, the gas mixture to be treated is hereinafter
referred to as exhaust air or polluted waste gas. The biofilter is continuously impinged with
the exhaust air in order to supply the microorganisms with oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen etc. and
carbon.

For this purpose the delivery rate of the fans, for instance, can be reduced with the installed
potentiometer for the frequency converter.
The pollutant components contained in the exhaust air flow are biochemically converted by
different groups of organisms, which do not prefer the same living conditions. The sulfur-
oxidizing organisms, for example, prefer an acidic pH level (pH 3-4), which can materialize
through the formation of sulfuric acid. Due to the humidification (damp exhaust air) and the
prior addition of limestone in the biofilter material as well as the installed time-controlled
additional overhead irrigation, a certain neutralization is achieved through the dilution with
water, so that the nitrifiers and pseudomonas cultures or rhodococci (responsible for the
reduction of the organic chemistry) find still relatively favorable environmental conditions
inside the filter material.

3. Design of the biofilter system

The biofilter system consists of the following main components:

- radial fan V 41 (CMV 125), single-stage direct; 0,55 kW, motor with PTC
thermistor in ATEX II
- PP container with exhaust air and condensate sockets and additional
countercurrent humidifier
- exhaust air distribution device (plastics)
- humidifier equipped with magnetic valve and nozzle stem, pump with protection
against dry running
- control cabinet with measurement and control technology
- pressure-side piping made of PP (DA=125)
- condensate pipeline
- water pipe with pressure regulator, strainer and shut-off valves
- additional overhead irrigation for biofilter basin with time-controlled magnetic
valve
- sampling sockets for manual inspection of the specifications of the exhaust air
flow at the suction side.

4. Description of the main equipment/ Technological concept

The exhaust air flow is drawn in by a fan V 41 (material PP, material rotor PPs-elec.,
volume flow approx. 500 Bm3/h, total pressure 600 Pa, connected load 0,55 kW; 1,32 A;
connection 400 V/60 Hz (ventilator in ATEX II design), which is provided and installed
inside the plant room and transported to the PP container. The fan is stored inside the
lockable plant room (TR; material PP), which is equipped with a lockable side door. The
suction line has been installed on site with the nominal width DA=200. The color of the
overall system is beige (RAL 7032). The volume flow can be manually adjusted and varied
via the flap EK 01 at the suction pipe inside from the fan inside the technical room.

The exhaust air passes bottom-up through the filter layer colonized with
microorganisms. The pollutants (H2S, NH3, hydrocarbons etc.) are sorbed during the
liquid phase of the filter material (water content approx. 55-65 Ma-%) and converted
into sulfate and elemental sulfur, ammonia, carbon dioxide and water and harmless
salts by the microorganisms.

At an inlet temperature of approx. 20 oC and a moisture content of 50 % rel. humidity of the

entering exhaust air as well as an assumed adiabatic evaporation, a water consumption of
approx. 15-20 l/h (incl. consumption for additional overhead irrigation filter material) for the
total exhaust air flow of 500 m³/h, is expected, given that the exhaust air flow always leaves
the filter passage vapor saturated.

The humidity regulation inside the filter material - for the evaporated water – is performed
by the humidifier (PP countercurrent humidifier with nozzle stem). The humidifier has been
equipped with an irrigation line (made of PVC-U) as well as 4 items spray nozzles (PE).
The humidification water is continuously recirculated by a submertsible pump P 03
(material stainless steel; 0.25 kW) and precisely conducted in countercurrent to the exhaust
air via the nozzles. The pressure inside the nozzle line is at approx. 0.5 bar. Inside the
humidifier, the exhaust air flow absorbs water up to a moisture content of approx. 100 % via
evaporation processes. The water that evaporates during the humidification is fed to the
humidifier via a fill-level controlled magnetic valve MV 27. For this purpose a floater LC 001
made of PP has been positioned inside the humidifier.

If the fill level LC 001 is too low, the magnetic valve MV 27 will open (in doing so, the pump
might switch off – protection against dry running if the fill level exceeds a determined
period of time timer set to 2 min). If the level LC 001 is back to normal, the magnetic
valve MV 27 will close again. The pump will also switch on automatically, once the fill level,
which had temporarily fallen below the level of the protection against dry running, is back to
normal due to repeated water supply. A additional LA-002 float is install directly on the
pump for dry running protect.
In order to rule out a fault message and the shutdown of the pump P 03 for this period of
time, timing elements have been integrated, which will e.g. not release the fault message
until the protection against dry running has been active for more than 5 min.
Simultaneously, the pump will be shut off as well. The basin inside the humidifier is filled
with enough water (fill level) approx. 20-25 cm above pump suction sockets!) to prevent any
damage to the pump in this case as well. The backfeed with fresh water takes about 1 min,
if the primary pressure at the water pipe is between 4-6 bar.

As protection against flooding of the humidifier, a static emergency overflow with shutoff
valve BV 03 has to remain open at all times!!!) has been incorporated into the system.
In case the magnetic valve MV 27 does not close the floater is "stuck", the water will drain
off through the emergency spillway and the condensate removal nozzle and from there
through a siphon on site into the shaft/ channel. At the air inlet nozzle a sample nozzle for
the exhaust air measurements to be performed manually (humidity, temperature, exhaust
air volume) has been installed. The results of those measurements have to be documented
( see attachment operating protocol!).

The panel filter has the following overall dimensions (the layout plan and the foundation
plan can be found in the manual):

Length: 3,500 mm
Width: 2,000 mm
Height: 2,000 mm

The biofilter is constructed in closed design, which means that it has been delivered with
cover for the filter material and chimney. The condensate line has been equipped with ball
valves made of PVC BV 04 and BV 05 have to remain open at all times!!!). The
condensate will then be discharged via a siphon (> 10 cm) to be provided on site. The ball
valve BV 03 at the emergency spillway of the humidifier has to remain open at all times.
For extreme conditions (especially hot spells and summer operation) an additional
humidification line with eccentric nozzles as well as a time-controlled magnetic valve MV
31, which can be switched on or must be switched on in situations like these, have been
installed above the filter material. It is advisable to run the additional irrigation (irrigation
interval every 1 h for 10 sec. irrigation duration!!) The excess water is conveyed through the
siphon into the channel/ shaft.
The control for the magnetic valve MV 31 has to be activated during test of the biofilter
plant in our house (every 1 h irrigation on for 10 sec.) and the ball valves BV 30 and BV
04 have to be opened. During operation these ball valves have to be opened in any case
due to the high ambient temperature and the switch for the irrigation has to be set to
position „1“.
Via inspection lids on top of the covers for the filter material, samples can be drawn for the
determination of the moisture content of the filter material (dry matter determination).
The moisture content of the material is best between 55 and 65 Ma-%.

The general biochemical reactions inside the filter material take place according to the
following equations 1+2: the biochemical conversion is in this case shown in the figure
below using hydrogen sulfide as an example:

During the elimination of the organic sulfur components by means of the sulfur-oxidizing
microorganisms, for instance, and the degradation of organic components, similar
substance and transport processes as shown in figure 1 take place, which are tied to the
following conditions:

- availability of oxygen
- existence of an oxidizable source of sulfur (e.g. hydrosulfide or organically bound
sulphur)
- availability of a nitrogen source ammonia
- availability of carbon dioxide (CO2) for sulfur oxidizer and hydrocarbons
(mercaptans etc.) as carbon source
- sufficient moisture content inside the filter material (55 Ma-%> Φ < 65 Ma-%)
- availability of phosphor, nitrogen, trace elements inside the filter material.
- optimum pH value (in the neutral area).

The biochemical conversion of hydrogen sulfide residues for example can take place in two
steps, which is diagrammed in the equations below:

1. Direct oxidation of hydrogen sulfide to sulfate

H2S + 2 O2 H2SO4 eq. (1)

2. Oxidation to sulfate with elemental sulphur as intermediate product

2 H2S + O2 2 S + 2 H2O eq. (2)

S + H2O + 1,5 O2 H2SO4 eq. (3)

During the oxidation of the pollutants, biomass and water occur in addition to the already
mentioned oxidation products. The biochemical processes are exothermal. The exothermal
energy released during these processes is, however, extremely low and only plays an
insignificant role with regard to the energy balance.
For control or regulation of the complete system, the following parameters have to be
measured by the operating personnel periodically (e.g. every 3 months).
o
- Temperature of the raw gas/ raw waste air (maximum temperature 50 C)
- Moisture content of the raw gas/ raw waste air
- Volume flow of the raw gas/ raw waste air
- Temperature of the clean gas (roughly corresponds to the temperature of the
filter material)
- Moisture content of the clean gas
- Pressure loss through the biofilter system (filter layer); for this purpose a U-tube
manometer has been installed p < 200 Pa (20 mmWS; 3 mbar uncritical!)!
- pH value of the condensed water (minimum pH value 5)
- Moisture content of the humidified air ( > 98 % rel. humidity)
o
- Temperature of the humidified exhaust air( > 10 C).

We recommend the regular measuring and documentation of the parameters

mentioned above. For those measurements that need to be performed manually, a
portable measuring instrument, which is easy to operate and with which
measurements can be performed at equidistant intervals (e.g. once a week) by the
operating personnel, can be delivered by TS GmbH. The results obtained have to be
documented and periodically (e.g. quarterly) reported to TS GmbH.

5. Basic construction of the biofilter

This section explains the construction of the biofilter.

The biofilter system consists of 3 main constituents.

It consists of two parts, for one, the actual biofilter, which has been delivered in the form of
a panel filter with PP walls and with cover for the filter material, with PE irrigation line for
additional humidification. For another, it consists of the fans for conveying the exhaust air
(positioned inside the TR technical facilities room) and the humidifier stage with pump P
03 (aggregates have also been positioned inside the plant room).
The plant room has been divided into two segments. Inside the first section, in which e.g.
the exhaust air ventilation devices – the fan V 41 (CMV 125) have been positioned, the
necessary technical equipment has been placed inside a so-called plant room to be
protected from the weather.

Inside the second section (airflow countercurrent to the nozzle stem) the humidifier incl. the
6 items nozzles and the rotary pump (0,25 kW; P 03) has been installed. The third plant
section – the actual biofilter – contains the filter material, which is stored on plastic grates.
3
This section can be filled with approx. 6,5 m filter material, which was also subject of the
delivery. -
The filter material has been filled in such a way that it rests evenly and flatly inside the
basin.

During another filling (exchange of filter material) care should be taken that the filter
material is accessed as little as possible ( otherwise increases pressure loss of the filter
filling!).

The filter material rests on a slatted floor made of the material PP. In order to rule out
boundary flows, a gas limit barrier (circumferential PE-HD film 250 mm wide and 5 mm
thick) has been installed.
The exhaust air flows through the filter layer bottom-up. Due to the high porosity of the filter
material and the associated large mass transfer area, the pollutants inside the filter layer
are sorbed. The filter material mix is classified. This classification of the filter material is
necessary to minimize the pressure loss.

The water content of the filter material during commissioning should be approx. 55-65 Ma-
%. The initial humidification can be carried out by the additional overhead irrigation with the
PE irrigation line via the magnetic valve MV 31 change irrigation duration at timer!!!.

The purified waste air is freely emitted into the atmosphere after having passed the filter
material.

6. Technical data of the biofilter

2
The plant has an active, biological filter area of approx. 4 m . The entire biofilter layer has a
3
reaction volume of approx. 6,5 m . The container has the following dimensions:

Length: approx. 3,500 mm

Width: approx. 2,000 mm
Height: approx. 2,000 mm.

The humidifier is made of PP material and the nozzles are also made of PP and have been
dimensioned for nominal width DN=25 (3/4“).The primary pressure for the water pipe for
the backfeed of the humidification water (proper operation of the magnetic valve) should
not fall below 4 bar. The maximum pressure at the water line must not exceed 6 bar
(pN=6). The pressure inside the circulation line should not fall below an operating pressure
of 0.2 bar to ensure appropriate spraying by the nozzles. For water supply a water pipe
installed on site has been coupled with the system. Inside the pipe a ball valve BV 20 has
been installed for shut-off. Inside the humidifier 4 nozzles made of plastics (PP material)
have been positioned and tubed with the circulation pump as well as the humidification box.
The plant room has been equipped with an ventilator for air change.

The peripheral devices have been placed inside the TR (technical facility room/utility room)
made of PP with lighting, service socket; and ventilator, so that it is not necessary to build a
separate facility room on site.

o
Water deficient in lime (< 10 dH) has to be added as humidification water, so that
especially the pump and the heater are protected against calcifications. Any
necessary repairs with regard to the pump and the heater etc. caused by water rich
in lime, are not covered by any warranty.
3
The biofilter has been dimensioned for an air volume to be exhausted of 500 Bm /h
maximum (at 50 oC) at the exhaust air inlet. The specific degradation capacity of the filter
3 2 3 3
(with regard to the filter area) is therefore approx. 125 m /m .h or ≈ 76,9 m /m .h (with
regard to the filter volume). Thus, the contact time is between 46 and 47 s. The odor
content of the exhaust air is to be reduced to values < 500 OU/m3.

The container is equipped with a condensate outlet sleeve. The sockets have been
connected by pipes that descend with the odor trap on site (DN=50).

The provided fan (ATEX II design) is equipped with a standard motor and has been
integrated into the overall plan. The entire system has been designed for a volume flow of
500 Bm³/h, at a total pressure of approx. 600 Pa. The fan has a connected load of 0.55
kW.

contents as well as the inlet temperatures of the exhaust air will remain relatively stable
throughout the year and that the water demand will reach its maximum in summer.

The substance data have been determined for a volume flow of 500 m3/h as follows:

Due to different outside temperatures (day and night) certain fluctuations concerning the
energy and water consumption naturally exist. Given the warm temperatures, even during
the winter, no special requirements are necessary with regard to anti-freeze protection, so
that option could be abandoned.

7. 1. Maximum water consumption/ condensate accumulation

The data imply the following water consumption and condensate accumulation for the
entire operating state (provided that they have the assumed inlet values).

Volume flow 500 m3/h

Water consumption (hot period) approx. 300 l/d

Water consumption (cold period) approx. 100 l/d
thereof desludging (once a day) approx. 240 l/d

Table 1: Water consumption/ condensate accumulation

Due to the favorable temperature conditions, NO ADDITIONAL installation of a heating

system is required during normal operation. The outlet temperature of the exhaust air and
thus also the reaction temperature will be between 10 and 50 oC, given the above-
mentioned conditions.

9. Characterization of the operating conditions of the plant

9.1. Initial inoculation and start-up of the filter with bacteria

The filter material is delivered and installed on site and can be inoculated with a
microorganism suspension (e.g. waste water from the wastewater treatment plant). The
inoculation quantity should be approx. 100-150 l. This suspension is distributed via the filter
material for the classification. The filter material is humidified via the additional overhead
irrigation. The adaptation phase until steady operation of the plant takes approx. 3-4 weeks.
After this period an initial reduction measurement (measurands: H2S concentration, NH3
concentration, total C-concentration, total odor concentration, volume flow, moisture
content of the filter material etc.) should be performed.

To activate the fan, the switch inside the control cabinet has to be actuated. The fan will
then start automatically. The fan can be switched off via the same switch. An analogous
procedure has to be used for the pump.

9.2. Description of the plant during operation and maintenance

information

During operation, the plant usually runs fully automated. As described in the sections
above, the operating personnel have to keep an operating log, in which the measured
values and the operating state of the plant (e.g. pressure loss) are recorded in writing. The
following maintenance and surveillance operations are to be performed regularly by the
operator of the plant:

1. Visual inspection of the dust and dirt content of the condensate and the circulating
water inside the humidifier. It is recommended to desludge the humidifier regularly
(at least monthly via the attached nozzles) and completely!
In case of buildup of solids, inspection of the dirt content in the raw gas.

2. Inspection of the moisture content of the filter material by measuring the moisture
content of the exhaust air and simultaneous check of the packing for clefts, cracks,
and lumps.
In case of overly dry filter material, longer spraying of the filter layer from the
top with sprinkler system.

st
1 English version – Processing status november 02, 2011
Page 17
technological concept for the biofilter plant TS
Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) Umweltanlagenbau
GmbH

3. Inspection of the dumping height of the filter material.

With organic material, subsidence formations always occur, which means
that the height of the filter layer drops and the pressure that is required rises.
Depending on the life and the operating costs (power consumption), a change
of the filter material shall be provided in case of overly high pressure loss (>
50 mmWS). The pressure loss should be checked weekly and has to be
documented in the operation protocol and reported to TS GmbH!
The filter material is loaded with elemental sulfur depending on the H2S
content of the exhaust air. Moreover the nutrient content inside the filter
material drops due to the microbiological activity of the microorganisms, which
causes a reduction in the microorganism activity and thus a deterioration of
the degradation rate. For that reason the filter material should be changed at
least every 2-3 years.

New filter material can be obtained from Firma TS GmbH within 15 working
days.

4.
In the case of an excessive lime content (> 10 odH) of the fresh water (e.g.
well water), the pump has to be descaled every 1-2 months. The same
applies for the heater inside the humidifier and the nozzles no warranty for
these aggregates in this case.

5.
Inspection of the temperature and the humidity of the humidified exhaust air.
In the case of moisture contents < 97 %, the nozzles inside the humidifier
have to be tested for accumulation of mud and if necessary have to be
cleaned.

6. Visual and manual inspection of the filter material with regard to moisture,
structure and pH value.
7. Keeping an operating log and mailing it quarterly to TS GmbH!

9.3. Shutdown of the plant

One switch for the pump and one for the fan, with which the aggregates can be
decommissioned, have been installed at the control cabinet. Upon actuating the switches,
the fan, the additional humidifying as well as the pump will be shut off.
