Adding and Subtracting Rational Algebraic Expressions

Introduction

We have learned from the past lesson on how to multiply and divide rational
algebraic expressions.

What about the remaining operations which are addition and subtraction of
rational expressions? Addition and subtraction of rational expressions are not as easy to
perform as multiplication because, as with numerical fractions, the process involves
finding common denominators. By working carefully and writing down the steps along
the way, you can keep track of all of the numbers and variables and perform the
operations accurately.

Lesson Proper

In adding or subtracting similar rational expressions, add or subtract the

numerators and write the answer in the numerator of the result over the common
denominator. In symbols,

a c a+c
+ = , b ≠ 0 or a/b – c/b where a > c and b is not equal to zero.
b b b
