1
A musical based on the Gothic novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.

Summary
As a work to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the opening of Chungmu Art Hall
belonging to Jung-gu Office, the premiere was performed from March 11 to May 18, 2014.
(The first week is the preview period, and it has been extended by another week from the
original performance period.) Wang Yong-beom, directing/scripting, and Lee Seong-joon
composing. As it is a work to commemorate the 10th anniversary, it is a creative musical that
pays attention to selecting actors and directing the stage in many ways. The main lines of the
Frankenstein novel are followed, but the details have undergone significant changes. It is also
unusual for all 11 lead actors to take on two roles. Even before the opening, it attracted the
attention of musical enthusiasts with its brilliant casting, and it is showing considerable
improvement even after the opening. Considering that it is a large-scale creative musical, it
performed surprisingly well.

It was reenacted at Chungmu Art Hall in November 2015, and covered a longer performance
period of nearly five months than before. The main actors were cast as Park Gun-hyung, Yoo
Joon-sang, and Jeon Dong-seok as Victor, while Henry was triple cast as Park Eun-tae, Han Ji-
sang, and Choi Woo-hyuk.

In 2014, Ryu Jung-han was the last person to sign the contract for the appearance at the time,
so there was concern that it was unknown whether Ryu would appear in the reenactment in
2015. It was very difficult during the 2014 performance, and there are rumors that there was
friction with Chungmu because there was no prior consultation during the extended
performance for a week. Thanks to (?), when the news that Ryu Jung-han was returning to the
3rd time cast in 2018 came out, many fans were surprised by what happened.

In August 2017, as seen at the Chungmu Art Center, a self-produced creative musical Benhur
was uploaded. Benhur, like Frankenstein, is also directed by Wang Yong-beom and composed
by Lee Sung-joon. The reenactment is scheduled to be performed at Blue Square in July 2019.
Director Wang Yong-beom is said to make a new trilogy. The first Frankenstein is a human who
wants to become a god, the second Ben-Hur is a human who met God, and the last is a
creative musical based on Dante's new song. It is said to be the story of a human being who
has to kill God.

It was announced that it was going to advance into Asia such as Japan and China, and the
performance went up by exporting a license to Japan in 2017, and it was performed again in
2020, three years later. At this time, Korean premiere actors made a surprise visit to a
Japanese concert hall. However, there is no news about the Chinese performance yet. On
August 26, 2018, there was a story that Chinese investors had come during the stage greetings
at the general ceremony.

In the summer of 2018, the third year came up. The theater was held at Blue Square Interpark
Hall.

Plot
Act 1.

(This document contains spoilers.) It directly or indirectly contains the plot, ending, and reversal
elements of the work or character described in this document.

The stage curtain rises, and a man appears supporting a human figure from a large machine.
The man lays the figure on the iron bed and yells at it to get up. Then outside, the voice of a
woman trying to stop him and the voice of an older man asking if he's okay are urgently heard.
The man, who did not want to be disturbed, goes to the voices to stop them and get them out
of the place. Meanwhile, thunder is falling outside the window, and the figure that the man
has covered with a cloth is startled by the sound and screams and jumps out of the iron bed,
and the play begins...

In 1815, Europe was engulfed in the fire of the Napoleonic Wars, in which Henry Dupre, a
doctor who was a master of body grafting, was serving as a surgeon. Henry, who had the belief
that all lives are precious, so he begins to treat even enemy soldiers medically, for this reason
he is on the verge of a summary disposition since he is accused of espionage.

Just as Henry is about to die, someone appears and stops him. That person is Victor
Frankenstein. Victor, who took Henry to the weapons lab he was in charge of, revealed the
purpose of his research, which was to create an 'immortal, superhuman soldier' out of a
corpse. At first, Henry was uncomfortable because he thought that it was God's domain to
create life, but soon he was impressed by Victor's firm beliefs and joined his experiments.

However, due to the end of the war, the laboratory was closed without achieving its goal, and
Victor and Henry head to Victor's hometown Geneva. The people of Geneva rejoice that the
war is over and throw a party at Victor's uncle, Mayor Stefan's castle, but murmuring rumors
about Victor. Victor's older sister Ellen and cousin and fiancée Julia try to stop people and
cover up Victor, but Victor, the party involved, suddenly appears at the party and takes the key
of the closed Frankenstein Castle and leaves the party atmosphere. Julia is cursing at Victor,
who met after a really long time but left without showing interest in her, but still retains her
love for him.

Victor and Henry move the lab to Frankenstein Castle to continue life creation experiments.
Meanwhile, Henry feels that the people of Victor's hometown do not like Victor and are rather
reluctant, and Ellen tells Henry the story of Victor's past.

When Victor was young, his brother and sister's mother became ill due to the Black Death in
the village, and his father, who was a doctor, finally leaned on the superstition of the middle
Ages, but eventually died of illness. Victor, unable to let his mother go, secretly takes his
mother's body from the cemetery and tries to revive it, but the fact that the body has returned
to the house and rumors that even the medieval folk remedies used by his father were the
work of witches spread, and eventually the townsfolk became Frankenstein. The castle is set
on fire, and Victor's father is trapped in the castle and rescues Victor who can't get out, but

3
instead loses his life. The brothers and sisters, who were left alone, live in the house of Mayor
Stefan and his daughter Julia, and it was at this time that Victor became obsessed with
resurrection and creation of life. Then one day, when Julia's beloved dog was hit and killed by a
wagon, Victor takes it, saying he would save it, and although he saved it in some way, the dog
violently bites Julia. Nevertheless, Mayor Stefan, who felt ominous about Victor's appearance,
who only liked to create life, sent Victor to a distant place, and Victor has grown into what he
is now.

Later, while continuing his research in Frankenstein Castle, Victor encounters difficulties, which
means that the brain cannot withstand the strong current used in the experiment and burns it
because it does not get enough fresh bodies. Victor drinks alcohol in despair, and Henri, who
comes to the bar to find him, comforts Victor in distress and tries to energize him again with
overworked dance time.

At that time, Victor's butler, Runge, who was helping them with the experiment, rushes to
inform them that they have found a way. He promised the funeral director a generous reward
and asked for the head of a body that had just died. As a result, Victor, Henry, and Runge visit
the mortician in the hope that they can continue the experiment, but an unexpected incident
breaks out. A money-blind mortician kills Walter, a village young man who has always admired
Victor, and gives him his head and demands more money, Victor, who lost his reason in anger,
kills a mortician with a stone. After fainting Victor, Henry stands on trial with all his sins
covered.

Hearing from Runge of the story, Ellen visits Victor, criticizes his silence, and asks if Henry's
head is necessary, but Victor is angry that everyone is always guessing his thoughts. On the
other hand, Julia comforts Victor, saying that any pain is only a moment, and Victor, who is left
alone in the room after Ellen, Julia and Runge have left, feels disgust at himself for not telling
the truth even though he knows the truth He confesses to himself that he killed the
undertaker.

However, Mayor Stefan claims that Victor is suffering from delirium due to the aftermath of
the war, so Victor's testimony is dismissed, and Henry is sentenced to death. Victor, who
visited for the last time just before the execution, begs Henry to tell the truth, but Henry is
meekly executed by the guillotine, saying that in order to achieve his dream, Victor must live.

Eventually, Victor creates life in a laboratory that looks like a Tardis control room with his cut
head stolen with the determination to revive Henry. When Victor takes the creature with
Henry's head out of the machine and lays him on an iron bed waiting for him to wake up, Ellen
finds out that the head is missing from Henry's body, and Runge runs to the laboratory,
worried about Victor.

Ellen and Runge are astonished that the creature Victor created has come to life, but Victor is
delighted that Henry is alive. However, when Runge sees a creature clinging to Victor, who has
yet to properly control his body, he thinks that the monster is trying to harm the master and
attacks the monster. Eventually, the creature bites Runge's neck and kills him. Ellen, who was
watching, fainted in shock, and Victor, who was frustrated, tries to kill the creature, but the
creature exits the laboratory and runs away.

4
Act 2.

Three years later, Victor and Julia finally get married in celebration of many people.

However, Victor was still anxious that the creatures might return. When Victor is only about to
shake off his anxiety with Julia's comfort, a servant announces the disappearance of Julia's
father, Mayor Stefan, and everyone searches through the woods to find Stefan.

Then, when he was left alone for a while, a monster appeared in front of Victor and called his
name. The monster blamed Victor for killing his friend and trying to kill him again after creating
him and tells Victor why he came back in fear and how he's been over the past three years...

The monster, who was created to be more powerful than the average human, quickly becomes
a champion of the fighting arena. However, the owners of the arena, Jacques and Eva, abuse
the monster for showing mercy and not wanting to kill his opponents. The only person that
sympathizes with the monster is Katherine, who washes his wounds in secret and tells him of
the Arctic. But their dream of running away to live in the peace and solitude of the arctic is
broken and ridiculed by Jacques and Eva.

Then one day, Fernando, a fighter's creditor, offers to exempt him from debt if his fighter and
monster fight and win. Along with the proposal, Fernando secretly approaches Catherine and
seduces her to give freedom if he takes the medicine he gives to the monster's water, is tired
of the abuse he receives in the arena, longs for freedom, and wants, eventually falls into that
temptation and betrays the monster.

The next day, the monster is eventually defeated, but Fernando's conspiracy is revealed, and
Catherine humbly clings to Jacques and begs, but it is implied that she will be dragged away by
servants to death. In the end, abandoned by everyone and left alone, the monster is engulfed
in misery and wrath to avenge its creator, set fire to the arena and visit Victor.

The monster who told this story goes somewhere after declaring revenge on Victor, and Victor
learns that his uncle, Mayor Stefan, has been murdered and that Ellen has been taken to the
square as the killer. Victor runs, but by the time he arrives, Ellen has already been hanged by
angry citizens. In front of Ellen's body hanging by the neck, Victor cries as he recalls old
memories with her older sister who comforted him when he was forced to leave for study
abroad by his uncle as a child.

Just like when he brought Henry's head, Victor secretly brings Ellen's body back this time with
the intention of saving his older sister, but the monster has already destroyed the laboratory,
making it impossible to bring it back to life. He criticizes and ridicules Victor who begs him to
kill him in piercing despair, and the monster disappears out of the window, telling him that his
revenge is not over.

On the same day that the monster is predicted to return, Victor gathers a group of people
armed with guns, sets up an iron guard, and waits for the monster to appear. But when
everyone is on their nerves, Julia's screams and gunshots come from inside the house. Victor

5
rushes inside and sees Julia being murdered. When the gunman who had stood to protect Julia
reported that 'the monster killed the young lady and ran out of the window while he was
away', everyone except Victor ran out, and the gunman took off his hat in front of Victor who
was left alone. ... None other than a monster.

The monster doesn't answer the question when he asks Victor why he killed Julia instead of
himself, but he tells him to follow him if he wants to get revenge because he will leave for the
North Pole. Look back on my past life and ponder the bitter regrets.

This is followed by the monster’s number called “The Wounded”. The monster, who
accidentally encountered a lost child in the forest, tells the child not to cry and tells him a
story. It is the story of a man who wants to become a star in the sky and creates a life that
resembles him. Hearing the story, the child asks the monster if the uncle is a man-made life,
and says he knew it by looking at the wound on his neck. The monster who replied, "Yes, I have
a wound" says that you too will pretend to be a human when you become an adult, pushes the
child into the water and tells him not to do it, then screams and cries. The actor who plays the
child in this scene is the child actor who plays the young Victor in the 'Story of a Lonely Boy'
scene, and perhaps because of this, this scene is a part where there is little room for
interpretation among fans. Some say that it happened with a child he met by chance, or that
he met a young Victor in the imagination of a monster, and some even interpret that this child
symbolizes Henry's personality, not Victor. It is difficult to insert this scene in the middle of the
above plot because the location of the scene changes every time a performance is uploaded.

Victor, who goes to the North Pole after a lot of hard work, encounters the monster again and
fights fiercely there, stabs him in the leg with a knife, but finally shoots him to death. The
monster tells Victor there is no way to leave the North Pole with such a leg wound Victor Since
he was stabbed in the leg he will bleed out and die in the arctic alone, who succeeded in
revenge but lost everything, hugs the body of the monster and screams, ending the play.

6
Character
Victor Frankenstein: A genius who encompasses philosophy, science, and medicine, but with
strong trauma. The motif is, of course, the original Victor Frankenstein.

Henry Dupre: A person who has a strong spirit of righteousness, after meeting Victor on the
battlefield, he is fascinated by Victor's beliefs and will, and becomes a research assistant.

Monster: A creature that admires humans, but is abandoned by the creator Victor, abused in
Jacques' fighting arena, and finally betrayed by Katherine. The motif is the original creature.
The actor who plays Henry plays two roles per person.

Julia: Victor's cousin and fiancé. She has been Victor's only friend since childhood, and she
marries Victor at the beginning of Act 1, the spiritual pillar of Victor, who understood and
embraced Victor even after she became an adult. However, she is shocked when her father,
Mayor Stefan, dies shortly after, and Ellen is accused of being the culprit. In the end, she was
caught up in revenge and was innocently murdered by her husband's creation. As a result,
Victor lost all the existence he relied on, and had no reason to live, so he went to the North
Pole to kill the creatures. The motif is Victor's cousin and fiancée Elizabeth Lavenza in the
original work.

Ellen: Victor's older sister, who keeps her brother and family secret and pain in her heart, is
the only family member who understands his actions, and is Victor's spiritual pillar 2. However,
caught up in the monster's revenge, she is framed for killing her uncle, and is dragged away by
people and hanged. Afterwards, Victor tries to save Ellen as if he had saved Henry in the past...
but the motif appears to be Justine or Justine Moritz, a maid who was executed for being
falsely accused of killing Victor's brother in the original work, and almost became Victor's
female creature. In the sense that it is an existence that did not survive in the end, it seems
that the motif was taken from the 'Bride of Creatures'.

Runge: A loyal butler of the Frankenstein family. Victor is a person who has been supporting
him since he was young, and when Victor went to war, he cared about him so much that he
participated. Even after Victor and Henri return to Switzerland, they continue to support their
research, but returning is the title of the first victim of the monster... Ellen and Stefan were the
first targets of revenge, and Runge was the first to be killed by the monster.

Stefan: Geneva market. Julia's father. He has hated Victor since I was little, but it seems that
during the three years between the first and second acts, he somehow relaxed his heart and
welcomed him as his son-in-law. But shortly thereafter, he became the first victim of the
monster's vengeance.

Jacques: Eva's husband, the male owner of the Arena field. He's a cruel, greedy, flirtatious,
and loving wife. However, if you look at "You are a Monster," it is full of sadistic
temperaments. It seems like they were just born in a relationship... Jacques is an actor who
plays the role of Victor as one person, two roles. At this time, the makeup and acting change
greatly.

7
Eva: The owner of the martial arts field and Jacques's wife. She is a strong and ferocious
woman who is very cruel. On the one hand, she is obsessed with money and finds joy in life by
making fun of monsters and Catherine. The actress who plays Ellen plays this role too.

Catherine: The maid of the fighting field. Although she is the only person who cares for the
monster abandoned by Victor and wounded by humans, she is being abused endlessly by the
fighting couples and people. There is even a direction that implies that she is dragged into the
hands of male servants and sexually assaulted in groups. It's an added bonus that not only the
fighting arena couple but also the female servants coldly ignore the fearful Catherine. In many
ways, the arena seems to be the threshold of hell both for the environment and for the heart.
In addition, the past is revealed in the number "Living" soon after, and it is said that since
childhood, she was raped by a human garbage father every night, and her mother eventually
sold Catherine for a few pennies of her. Tired of this, he longs for freedom, but eventually falls
for Fernando's trick and betrays the monster. Similarly, the actor in the role of Julia digests two
roles. You have to sing both the 'There,' which shows the monster and the friendly side, and
the dark and tragic 'To live' number.

Igor: The gatekeeper of the arena and henchman of Jacques. In Chaeyeon, he appears as a
hunchback, but in Seomyeon, he appears as a clown. The motif seems to be Igor, the
hunchback servant of Victor Frankenstein, who appears in the Frankenstein movie version. He
appears frequently in the movie versions, but does not appear in the original. The actor in the
role of Runge too.

Fernando: Although it is introduced on the official website as an investor in the arena, it is

more like a loan shark in the comments and treatment of the work. A man who yearns for
femininity, but hides his masculine. The actor in the role of Stefan digests it in two roles. The
Fernando version of the premiere actor Lee Hee-jung's profile picture was quite
unconventional and shocked the fans.
