English New Media 11


New Media 11 is designed to reflect the changing role of technology in today’s society and the increasing importance of digital
media in communicating and exchanging ideas. In addition to print texts, this course will use a variety of forms of digital media
to explore, analyze and respond to issues and themes relevant to language, story, and digital citizenship. A central theme of the
course will be for students to recognize and appreciate how different structures and features of texts enhance and shape
meaning. As this course will maintain a focus on practicing increasingly sophisticated forms of composition, students will be
required to study, analyze, and respond to what they read, view, and hear through writing, discussion, and oral presentation.

THE ASSESSMENT:
 Formative: Activities marked for completion to give
you an opportunity to practice and receive
constructive feedback (homework, class activities, etc.)
 Summative: Assignments given a grade according to
your ability to know/do what is asked (writing,
presentations, projects, tests, etc.)

**All students must complete the self-assessments of core competencies in My Blueprint.

THE EXPECTATIONS:
1. Respect everyone in the room at all times by being an active participant, attentive
listener (not talking while others are talking) and cooperative partner. Respect others
ideas by keeping an open mind.
2. Take responsibility for your actions and ownership over your learning by arriving
promptly to class ready to learn and with the necessary materials.
3. Insure your own and other’s safety at all times by keeping walkways clear of tripping
hazards and the classroom free of any other harmful materials or behaviours.

ATTENDANCE:
1. Absences: Parent/ guardian is expected to notify the school of all absences.

2. Lates: Please wait silently outside the door, check in with me and enter quietly
3. Missed Work: In the event of an excused absence, you are permitted to complete
missed work. If the absence is unexcused, permission will be granted at my discretion 
4. Leaving class: Ask for permission before leaving and during an appropriate break in
instruction! Only one student may leave the classroom at a time so be quick.

ASSIGNMENTS:
1. SUBMISSIONS: All assignments must have your NAME/DATE/PERIOD displayed at the
top right of the page and be typed or written in blue or black ink.
2. LATE ASSIGNMENTS: Please avoid penalty by turning assignments in on time or
requesting an extension well in advance of the due date.
3. PLAGIARISM: Plagiarize (verb) to take and use as one’s own the thoughts, writings,
inventions, etc. of another. Plagiarism is theft. It is a serious offence and can have legal
implications.

Use of electronic devices is not permitted at any time during class and should be put on
silent and stored in your bag unless explicitly stated otherwise. Some common
exceptions may include phone use during designated research periods, scheduling
homework, and individual music listening during quiet work periods. At no time should
electronic devices cause distraction
