Lecture (4)

Equilibrium of a
Particle

Dr\ Sameh Tawfik 2

2
Lecture Objectives

 To introduce the concept of the free-body diagram for a

particle.

 To show how to solve particle equilibrium problems using the

equations of equilibrium.

Dr\ Sameh Tawfik 3

3
Condition for the Equilibrium of a Particle

ΣF=0

where :-
Σ F is the vector sum of all the
forces acting on the particle.

Free-Body Diagram

Dr\ Sameh Tawfik 5

5
Procedure for Drawing a Free-Body Diagram

1- Draw Outlined Shape

Imagine the particle to be isolated or cut “free” from its

surroundings by drawing its outlined shape.

2-Show All Forces.

Indicate on this sketch all the forces that act on the particle .

3- Identify Each Force.

The forces that are known should be labeled with their
magnitudes and directions.
W = 1000 N

Example :-
The sphere in Figure has a mass of 6 kg and is supported as
shown. Draw a free-body diagram of the sphere, the cord
CE , and the knot at C

Dr\ Sameh Tawfik 9

9
Given:-
The shown figure with all its data

Required:-
Draw a free-body diagram of the :-
1-sphere
2-the cord CE
3- the knot at C

Dr\ Sameh Tawfik 10

10
Solution:-
* forces acting on the sphere:-
1- Weight 6 × 9.81 = 58.9 N
2- The force of cord CE acting on sphere (FCE)
The free-body diagram is shown in Figure (b) .

Dr\ Sameh Tawfik 11

11
* forces acting on the cord:-
1- Force of knot acting on cord CE (FEc)
2- Force of sphere acting on cord CE (FCE)
The free-body diagram is shown in Figure (c) .

Dr\ Sameh Tawfik 12

12
* forces acting on the knot:-
1- Force of cord CBA acting on knot (FCBA)
2- Force of spring acting on knot (FCD)
3- Force of cord CE acting on knot (FCE)
The free-body diagram is shown in Figure (c) .
