Chapter 1 Product Description

1 Product Description

Loop Telecom’s Terminal Server module is a plug-in card that has both synchronous and asynchronous
interface capability and also allows you to interface with raw RS232 data at the Network Control Center. It is
designed for use in the Loop-AM3440.

1.1 Product Specifications

The specifications of the Terminal Server module are listed below.

Table 1- 1 Terminal Server Module Specifications

Connector One DB-44 conversion cable to one DB-9 and two DB-25 connectors
Ports One Async RS232 port, two Async / Sync RS232ports.
The two Async / Sync ports can be configured independently as Sync or
Async.
Data rate Async: 1.2kbps, 2.4kbps, 4.8kbps, 9.6kbps, 19.2kbps, 38.4kbps
Sync: 64 kbps
Layer 2 Protocol of RS232 Async SLIP or raw data
Layer 2 Protocol of RS232 Sync PPP
Terminal Server Function Supports Telnet
Router Function RIP-I, RIP-II, Static Route

Chapter 1 Product Description

1.2 Application Illustrations

The Terminal server module could support three RS232 interfaces. One interface (DTE3) is fixed for RS232
ASYNC interface. The other two interfaces (DTE1 and DTE2) could be configured as ASYNC or SYNC
interface independently. Router function is built inside the plug-in. The main function of this plug-in is to convert
PPP/SYNC, SLIP/ASYNC and raw data to IP packet. The IP packet will be sent to the routing engine on the
card, then sent to T1/E1 through the Time Slot Interchange of the Loop-AM3440 series.

As shown in the following figure, the terminal server module card could simultaneously support all the three
modes: PPP/SYNC, SLIP/ASYNC and raw data.

2.1 Mechanical Installation
The terminal Server module card can be plugged into any of the available slots in the Loop-AM3440 unit.

Slot A is usually reserved for T1/ E1 line connection because that slot has line monitoring jacks

Important Note:
For proper operation of the Loop-AM3440 and the Terminal Server module in particular, the
AM3440 chassis must be grounded. Connect the chassis ground screw to a good earth
connection with at least a AWG 16 wire.

4 Terminal Operation
The Loop-AM3440 series provides comprehensive report and enhanced configuration capability through the
console port. A VT100 type terminal can be connected to the console port in the front of Loop-AM3440. Using
single-character commands and arrow keys, Loop-AM3440 can be configured and monitored. The
single-character command is not case sensitive. On each screen, the available commands and the
configurable fields are highlighted. Alarm messages are also sent to the console port and are shown on the top
of the screen in blinking mode. Upon Loop-AM3440 power up, a main menu is shown. Please refer to AM3440
Controller Manual for more detail AM3440 Controller Terminal Operation. Shown below is the menu tree for
the Terminal Server card that could be seen after selecting Terminal Server card from the Controller screen.
