SOCIOLOGY INTRO CLASS DISCUSSION ACTIVITY:

“Sociology is the study of society. In order to understand society we must be able to see the
world through the eyes of others. By using this “sociological imagination” you can
understand the world around you.”
The above quote is from your text intro section “Why Sociology Matters.” The quote raises the
key point that in this class you will be asked to examine, consider, reflect upon, and DISCUSS various
individuals and actions that influence society – past, present, and future. This requires self-
awareness, maturity, and respect for yourself and for others in the classroom. Honest, respectful
class discussion will enhance this class immeasurably and it is strongly encouraged.
Having said that, I acknowledge that open and honest class discussions are sometimes difficult to have.
Arguably, there is not a more “social” place than university. However, not everyone feels comfortable coming into a
new social situation (i.e. – this class) and sharing their personal convictions. So – this introduction activity is intended
to be a self-revealing, and interactive. Not only is it an excellent way for me to get to know my new students, but also a
fun activity that will set a positive tone and help you to get to know your classmates as well.

As law school students are media junkies. And you are all most likely much more tech savvy than me! For this activity
I want you to choose either a movie clip or a song that reveals at least one aspect of who you are, how you define
yourself, or highlights something you feel is very important. Students should plan to either show the clip or read a short
transcript from a movie.* If the movie idea doesn’t appeal to you, you should select a song that has meaning for you
and plan to play one minute of the song for the class.* Then, you should be prepared to explain why you selected the
song or movie clip and to share with the other students in this class the important quality, value or truth it may reveal
about you.

* The movie clip/transcript and the song lyrics MUST be school appropriate. No vulgar language, excessive violence
or any other content that is not school appropriate.

The primary goal of this is for you to develop a level of comfort with your classmates since you will be engaged in
discussion and collaboration with each other throughout the semester.
