ENINEERING METALLURGY 2020

Experiment No.2

Aim: To determine hardness of H.S.S., cast iron, brass and razor blade test pieces using different
scales of Rockwell and Rockwell superficial hardness tester.

Apparatus:
I) Rockwell and Rockwell superficial hardness tester.
II) Test specimens of above mentioned materials.

Test Principle: In this method hardness is correlated with the depth of indentation and not with
the area of indentation. Harder the material, depth of indentation is less for a given load. Hence,
the hardness is inversely proportional to the depth of indentation.

Procedure:
I) Select suitable scale as per the given material.
Factors controlling scale selection:
i) Type of material
ii) Specimen thickness
iii) Test location
iv) Scale limitations.
II) Place the specimen on the anvil and raise the anvil slowly till specimen surface touches the
indenter and minor load is applied.
III) Apply major load by means of a release handle. This load is gradually applied by means of a
dashpot arrangement.
IV) Remove major load without removing minor load and read hardness number directly from
the dial.

Observation Table:

Sr. Type of Materials Type of Scale Rockwell hardness No.

No. Scale Minor Major Indenter
Load Load
1 Cast Iron
2 H.S.S.
3 Brass
4 Razor blade
