Decide if the following sentences are True (T) or False (F).

1. T (student is correct)
2. T (student is correct)
3. NG (the student has made an assumption – the text does not give him that information)
4. F (the student is correct)
5. F (the student is wrong. The test says that some experts believe that not having a normal
childhood can do long-lasting damage – it does not only say what the mother and father say).
6. T (the student is correct)
7. NG (the student is wrong. Yes, the test only mentions one program but that does not tell us
that Airan doesn’t watch other programs).
8. F (the student is correct)

UNIT 3: Comprehension

To score highly in the fluency assessment

criteria, you’ll need to fluidly discuss and
link your ideas together – giving detail or
showing different opinions. Using a few
good ‘connectives’ shows you can
structure your ideas well which is a
guaranteed way to improve your score!

In business (and in the IELTS test) you are assessed on your ability to communicate
ideas fluently. For that reason, we should avoid using fillers such as, “err” and “um” as
they don’t have any real meaning (other than you can’t think what to say!).

How do you think transport will develop in the future?

Example: That’s a very interesting question. Although transport has developed a lot over the last
few decades, I think that flights will eventually become more expensive due to the lack of oil and
other natural resources. I suppose you never know, maybe we’ll be teleporting soon!

It’s always fun to be expressive and that’s just what “opinion openers” do. They show
you can organize and arrange your thinking clearly. In a real life setting they also help
you to persuade and influence!

During the test, it’s your time to shine and show off all your excellent language skills.
A top tip I teach my students is to practice story telling by describing things in
greater detail. By up-leveling this skill, you’ll be able to talk for longer and describe
things in a much more fluent and detailed way.

Practice writing out the 5 Ws against these example questions below. Then try and speak
in detail about the question, using your notes to guide you. The more you practice this
(with lots of different topics) the easier you will find speaking in detail and at length.

Q: Do you believe that having a university degree is important?

o What: Depends what job you want

o Where: Colleges provide qualifications before Universities
o Why: Useful for money but not always
o Who: My friend, Chris

Example answer against the notes:

“That’s a very interesting question. In my opinion, it really depends on what kind of job
you want in the future. My friend Chris didn’t get a degree from university, but he earns
lots of money from his work and only studied in college until he was 18. Also, even
though degrees can help you earn extra money, there’s never a time when learning
new skills becomes impossible!
