Chords, Arc, Central Angles, and Inscribed

Angles
Learning Competency: Derives inductively the relation among chords, arcs,
central angles, and inscribed angles. (M10AL-IIc-1)

This worksheet will discuss the definition about circle and some
related terms such as chord, radius, diameter, arc, semicircle, central angle,
and inscribed angle as introductory part in deriving inductively the relation
among them.

Concept/Short Input:
Concept 1: Chords, Arc, Central Angles, and Inscribed Angles

Before going further into the relation among chords, arc, central
angles, and inscribed angles let’s know first these definitions related to the
circle.
Definitions:
1. Chord – is a segment whose endpoint are any two points on the circle.
2. Arc – is a connected part of portion of a circle.
3. Central angles – is an angle formed by two radii of a circle with its vertex
in the center of the circle.
4. Inscribed angle – is an angle whose vertex is on the circle and whose
sides are chord of the circle.
5. Radius – is a segment that joins the center of the circle to a point on a
circle.
6. Diameter – is a chord which passes through the center at a circle.

SUMMARY OF THE LESSON

A circle is a set of all points in the plane that are the same distance
away from the specific point called the center. There are important parts of
the circle such as chord, arc, central angles, diameter, radius, semicircle,
and inscribed angle. The whole rotation of a circle is 360 degrees.

Inscribed Angles, Central Angles, and

Intercepted Arc
Learning Competency: Derives inductively the relation among chords, arcs,
central angles, and inscribed angles. (M10AL-IIc-1) (Part 2)

Concept/Short Input:
In deriving the relation among chords, arcs, central angles, and
inscribed angle, you must have the skill of measuring an angle before going
through the main lesson. Remember the steps in measuring an angle:

Step 1. Place the origin of the protractor over the center point, or vertex of
the angle.
Step 2. Rotate the protractor to align the one ray (side) of the angle with
zero degree. Maintain the vertex of the angle in the origin of the protractor.
Step 3. Read the degrees where you need to follow the opposite ray of the
angle crosses the protractor.

Example 1: The circle M is divided into eight equal parts. The total
circumference of the circle is 24 cm. Since, it is divided by eight equal parts,
so, each arc measures 3 cm.
Questions:
1. What is the measure of ∠BAI?
Solution: The measure of entire
circle is 360⁰. Since the circle is
divided by 8, so each central
angle measures 45⁰. Therefore,
the measure of ∠BAI is 45⁰.

2. What is the measure of the

intercepted arc of ∠BAI or the
̂ in degree?
measure of 𝐼𝐵
̂ = 3cm, we will
Solution: Since 𝐼𝐵
convert this to degree by dividing
this by the circumference 24 cm
3𝑐𝑚
= of 360⁰
24𝑐𝑚

= .125 ( 360)
= 45⁰
3. What can you say about the
measure of central angle ∠BAI
̂?
and its intercepted arc 𝐼𝐵
Answer: They are equal in measure
which is both 45⁰.
Example 2:

Questions:
1. What is the measure of a
central angle ∠BAD?
Answer: ∠BAD = 60⁰
2. What is the measure of the
inscribed angle ∠BJD?
Answer: ∠BJD = 30⁰
3. Compare the measure of
inscribed angle (30⁰) to central
angle (60⁰).
30⁰ is one-half of 60⁰

m∠ASM = __________ (inscribed angle)

Question: 5. What can you say about the measure of the inscribed angle
with respect to its intercepted arc?
The measure of the inscribed angle is half of the measure of its intercepted arc.

Summary of the Lesson
• Central angle are angles formed by two radii in a circle. The
vertex is the center of the circle. Central angle is equal to the
measure of its intercepted arc.
• Inscribed angle is formed by two chords that have common
endpoint on the circle. The measure is ½ the measure of its
intercepted arc.
