LESSON 2
Street Dance
INTRODUCTION
Street dance encompasses a wide variety of dances including stepping,
footwork, boogie, jerking, and head banging. All of these dances come from different
genres: house, disco, hip-hop, rock and punk. This field guide will focus on the hip-hop
genre and more specifically hip-hop street dances that originate in Southern California.
Street dance by definition is a style of dance that evolved in urban and suburban
areas. As the name suggest the dance is seen in the street but can also be seen at
dance parties, block parties, school yards, parks, etc.
Hip-hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music
or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles
primarily breaking, locking, and popping which were created in the 1970’s and made
popular by dance crews in the United States.

Power moves comprise full-body spins and rotations that give the
illusion of defying gravity.
Popping
Popping was popularized by Samuel Boogaloo Sam Solomon and his crew the
electric Boogaloos. It is based on the technique of quickly contracting and relaxing
muscles to cause a jerk in a dance’s body.
Popping forces parts of your body outwards, similar to an explosion within parts
of your body. Popping also contract muscles, but it is followed by relaxation that gives it
the jerking appearance of popping.

Krumping

Waacking
Waacking is a dance style that was created in dance clubs on the west coast of
the USA in the 1970s. Waacking is characterized by a focus on arm movements,
creating shapes and poses above and around the head in a fast-moving style. Waacking
is often danced to disco music. Waacking incorporates wild but controlled moves that
fallow the beat. Arm movements up and around the head, in time with a disco or funk
beat, characterized Waacking. It has a strong emphasis on musicality, as arm
movements follow the music and the beat, with poses thrown in. Waacking is typically a
Freestyle Dance that can incorporate other body and feet moves from different dance
styles.
