Street dance encompasses a wide variety of dances including stepping,
footwork, boogie, jerking, and head banging. All of these dances come from different
genres: house, disco, hip-hop, rock and punk. This field guide will focus on the hip-hop
genre and more specifically hip-hop street dances that originate in Southern California.

Street dance by definition is a style of dance that evolved in urban and suburban
areas. As the name suggest the dance is seen in the street but can also be seen at
dance parties, block parties, school yards, parks, etc.

Hip-hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music

Toprock Footwork - oriented steps performed while standing up
Downrock Footwork performed with both hands and feet on the
floor
Freezes stylish poses done on your hands
Power moves comprise full-body spins and rotations that give the
illusion of defying gravity.

Popping

Popping was popularized by Samuel Boogaloo Sam Solomon and his crew the
electric Boogaloos. It is based on the technique of quickly contracting and relaxing
muscles to cause a jerk in a dance’s body.

Popping forces parts of your body outwards, similar to an explosion within parts
of your body. Popping also contract muscles, but it is followed by relaxation that gives it
the jerking appearance of popping.

Locking

Locking or campbellocking, was created by Don Campbellock Campbell in 1969

in Los Angeles California. It was popularized by his crew, The locker. Locking can be
identified by its distinctive stops. It is usually performed by stopping the fast movement
that you are doing, locking your body into a position longer. The lock is the primary move
used in locking in place and after a brief freeze moving again.

Of South-Central Los Angeles, California and is a relatively new form of the ‘Urban Black

performed to electronic music, the dance originated in the Melbourne rave scene, and
was popular in the 1980s and 1990s. The dance moves involve a fast heel-and-toe
movement or T step, combined with a variation of the running man coupled with a
matching arm action.

supposed to stylize the poses seen on reliefs in the art of ancient Egypt, and refers to

Waacking

Waacking is a dance style that was created in dance clubs on the west coast of
the USA in the 1970s. Waacking is characterized by a focus on arm movements,
creating shapes and poses above and around the head in a fast-moving style. Waacking
is often danced to disco music. Waacking incorporates wild but controlled moves that
fallow the beat. Arm movements up and around the head, in time with a disco or funk
beat, characterized Waacking. It has a strong emphasis on musicality, as arm
movements follow the music and the beat, with poses thrown in. Waacking is typically a
Freestyle Dance that can incorporate other body and feet moves from different dance
