Topic/Title TYPES OF VOLCANOES

Grade Level Grade 9

Time Allotment 60 min./1 hour

Teacher Exequiel M. Ramientos Jr

Content Standard The learners demonstrate an understanding of the volcanoes found in the
Philippines.

Learning Competency The learners should be able to:

Describe the different types of volcanoes (S9ES -IIIa25)

Objective By the end of the Lesson the students will be able to:

1. Describe the different types of volcanoes

2. Illustrate and label the parts of different types of volcano .
3.

Lesson Proper Materials

1. Elicit (3mins): Access prior knowledge.

The teacher will have a quick review about the Plate Tectonic Movement and The PowerPoint Presentation
formation of Volcanoes. Students will be grouped into 4 and each will be given a task
named “Arrange me”.

Questions:

a. What can you see in the world map?

b. What do you think the red dots/lines symbolize or represent?
c. What is present in the areas that are located along the pacific ring of fire?
d. How are volcanoes formed?
e. In what particular places in the Philippines can we find volcanoes?
f. What are the volcanoes found in the Philippines

(SEE APPENDIX A)

2. Engage (4mins): Get the students minds focused on the topic (short question or picture).

Video Presentation
The teacher will show a video presentation on the different volcanoes in the Philippines
and let them observe. Then, the teacher will ask questions

3. Explore (8mins): Provide students with a common experience.

PowerPoint Presentation

With the same groups, the teacher will give an activity. Each group will be given
pictures of the different types of volcanoes and they are going to describe it using the
Main Idea Web .

 Group 1 will describe the Cinder Volcano

 Group 2 will describe the Shield Volcano
 Group 3 will describe the Cone Volcano

(SEE APPENDIX B)

4. Explain (25mins): Teach the concept. Should include interaction between teacher and students.

*PowerPoint Presentation

The teacher will discuss the content on Periodic trends and will intend to finish or attain *TV
this following objectives:
*Flash Drive/Laptop
 Describe the different types of volcanoes
 Illustrate and label the parts of different types of volcano.

(SEE APPENDIX C)
5.Elaborate (8 mins): Students apply the information learned from the lesson.

The four (4) groups will be given 1periodic trend. They will identify if it is increasing or
decreasing depending on what periodic trend will be assigned to them, they will draw an
arrow on the Periodic Table of elements given to them.

(See Appendix D)

6.Evaluate (8mins): How will you know the students have learned the concept?

 Exit slip
To measure the students understanding about the topic, the teacher will give a short quiz questionnaire
for them to answer. The teacher will display to the monitor the questionnaire for the
students to answer. Students who can answer will then be given the exit slip as their pass
to leave the room later on.

(SEE APPENDIX E)
7.Extend (4mins): Deepen conceptual understanding through use in new context.

Assignment:

Pick your own 5 elements in the PERIODIC TABLE and arrange it base on the
following periodic trends below. Use ½ crosswise of a long bond paper or construction
paper. (20 pts.)

1. Decreasing Atomic Radius

2. Decreasing Ionization Energy
3. Increasing Electron Affinity
4. Increasing Electronegativity

Appendix A: Arrange Me

Objective: After the activity the students will be able to recall the Tectonic Plate Boundaries and the
formation of volcano.

Instruction: Arrange the puzzle to form a picture.

Appendix B: Match Me

Objective: At the end of the activity the students will be able to match and identify the four trends of
periodic table.

Instruction: With the same group that you have earlier, match the column A to its definition in column B.

Column A Column B

d 1.Electronegativity a. the distance from the atom’s nucleus to the outer edge of the electron cloud.
e 2.Periodic trends b. the energy needed to remove an electron from an atom.
c 3.Electron Affinity c. the ability of an atom to attract and hold an extra electron
a 4.Atomic Radius d. is the measure of the ability of an atom to hold electrons on itself.
b 5. Ionization Energy e. are specific patterns that are present in the periodic table that illustrate
different aspects of a certain element, including its size and its electronic properties.

Appendix C: LESSON PROPER

Objectives: At the end of the activity the students will be able to Use the Periodic Table in describing the trends of
the periodic properties and Arrange Elements according to Periodic Trends.

Arrange Elements according to Periodic Trends.

 ATOMIC RADIUS
Atomic radius is the distance from the atom’s nucleus to the outer edge of the electron cloud. Atoms are
assumed to be spheres. To find the atomic radius, get the distance between 2 nuclei and divide the distance by 2.

GROUP TREND: Atomic radius increases as you move from top to bottom in a family. This is because major
energy levels (1-7) are being filled with more & more electrons. The electrons get farther & farther from the
nucleus.

PERIOD TREND: Atomic radius generally decreases from left to right as atomic number increases. This is
because extra electrons are entering the same level while the nucleus gets larger & more positive. This draws the
electron cloud in towards the nucleus.

Down the group (top to bottom)

Increases because of the increasing number of energy levels/ electron shielding
Across a period (left to right)
Decreases because of increasing number of protons and electron

 IONIZATION ENERGY
Ionization energy is the energy needed to remove an electron from an atom. The ionization energy may be an
indicator of the reactivity of an element.

GROUP TREND: In vertical groups, ionization energy decreases from top to bottom. This is because electrons are
farther from the nucleus & filled levels cause a shielding effect.
PERIOD TREND: Ionization energy tends to increase as you move from left to right toward the noble gases. This
is because metals tend to lose electrons & nonmetals tend to gain electrons. All of them want to be as stable as
the noble gases.

Across a period (left to right)

Increases due to increase in valence electron that leads to elements stability.
Down the group(top to bottom)
decreases due to electron shielding

 ELECTRON AFFINITY
Electron affinity is the ability of an atom to attract and hold an extra electron

GROUP TREND: Electron affinity decreases from top to bottom of a group. This is because it’s easier for small
atoms with the nucleus closer to the outer electrons to gain another electron.

PERIOD TREND: Electron affinity in a horizontal period increases from left to right. This is because the desire to
gain an electron increases the closer you get to fill the energy level. What do you think the electron affinity of
the noble gases is? Zero, they are happy like they are.
Across a period (left to right)
Increases because of increasing valence electron.
Down the group(top to bottom)
Decreases because of the increase in atomic radius.

 ELECTRONEGATIVITY
Electronegativity is the measure of the ability of an atom to hold electrons on itself.

GROUP TREND: Electronegativity decreases from the top to bottom. Smaller atoms have a shorter distance to the
nucleus & less shielding effect.

PERIOD TREND: Electronegativity values increase as you go from left to right. Metals want to empty their
sublevels so they lose electrons. Nonmetals want to gain electrons so they can be like the noble gases.

Across a period (left to right)

Increases because of increasing valence electron
Down the group (top to bottom)
Decreases due to increase in atomic number and radius.

Appendix D
Objective: At the end of the lesson the students will be able to develop their critical thinking skill in identifying the
placement of arrows on the periodic table. Also to possibly correct the student’s misconceptions about the topic.

Instruction: Draw an arrow with increasing and decreasing labels of the periodic trend assigned to you.

RUBRIC FOR PERIODIC TRENDS ACTIVIES

Appendix D: Exit Slip!

Objective: To measure the students understanding about the topic, the teacher will give a short quiz for them to
answer. The teacher will distribute and exit slip questionnaire for the students to answer, since it is an exit slip the
students will not be allowed to go out of the room without giving their output to their teacher.
