Anika Schwarzlose - Seeing into Stone

ROMA Publications 2021 ISBN 9789464460032 Acqn 32094

Pb 14x21cm 136pp col ills £22.50

The expression "seeing into stone" describes a spiritual practice, a metaphor for tunnel vision,
focusing on what lies within, invisible. Anika Schwarzlose's project of the same name presents
research and archival materials from various sources. In collages, images taken by the Siberian
documentary photographer Veniamin Metenkov are combined with pictures from archives and
product catalogues of mining and machine suppliers. The collection centres around the human
relationship to rock and soil, and our shared reliance on resources contained within it. Ultimately,
our brief existence seems of little importance in relation to the long arc of geological time.

Nick Geboers – Traefaengslet
ROMA Publications 2022 ISBN 9789464460087 Acqn 32168
Pb 22x33cm 48pp ills £26.50

'Traefaengslet' (The Wooden Prison) is a collection of photographs made by Nick Geboers in the
prison cells of the historical buildings of Kunstmuseet Tonder, part of Museum Sonderjylland in
Southern Jutland, Denmark. The close-ups reveal marks, traces, glyphs, pictograms, and
messages scratched, etched, and carved into the wooden walls, a collective evidence left behind
by years of imprisonment. Geboers is an image-seeker fascinated by the rich history of
photography. He also presents his own images in carefully thought out constellations. Switching
between the position of an archaeologist and a visual author, he moves in a free space between
hard and soft sciences.

Bart Lodewijks - Noordereiland Drawings
ROMA Publications 2022 ISBN 9789464460094 Acqn 32169
Pb 18x25cm 160pp col ills £23.75

Situated in the middle of the river Maas, between the northern and southern parts of Rotterdam,
Noordereiland is shaped like a typical riverboat. Bart Lodewijks trekked from its western to its
eastern end, making his drawings in chalk on commercial buildings, ship cabins, quay walls,
houses, and steel pipes. He then wrote a poetic account of the life he encountered on the island,
published in three parts. His presence as an outsider there elicited both questions and stories
from the island's inhabitants; snapshots of trust and distrust. Although wind and rain will inevitably
erase the artist's traces on the island, through this publication it becomes permanently anchored
in memory.

Rene Heyvaert - Denver Mosaic 1961
ROMA Publications 2022 ISBN 9789464460063 Acqn 32170
Pb 22x38cm 34pp col ills £25.30

In 1961, Belgian architect Rene Heyvaert conceived 'Denver Mosaic' for a building on the
outskirts of Denver, Colorado. Due to its scale, permanence, and site specificity, the mosaic has
a spatial operation that is closely linked to architecture and embodies many aspects that would
play an important role in Heyvaert's later two-dimensional and sculptural works as an artist. The
time he spent in the United States marks a transformative period in which he initiated his
transition from architect to visual artist; the mosaic is the most significant work produced in this
period. This edition is a spin-off of research conducted by the design office AVDAK for an
exhibition on Heyvaert's work.
