 Auroville is an universal township at
Villupuram district in Tamilnadu near
Puducherry in India.
 Auroville has its origins in the french
language, “aurore" meaning dawn
and “ville" meaning city.
 It was found by Mirra Alfassa also
known as the mother.
 It was designed by the architect
Roger Anger.
Auroville city planning
 The plan of Auroville looks like a circular galaxy
 The total city is divided into six zones which are
industrial zone, residential zone , international
zone , cultural zone , peace area and green
belt
 Peace area in the center comprises of mantri
mandhir and a lake
 Residential zone is the largest of all which is
bordered by parks
 Cultural zone facilitates for cultural ,
educational , sport and art activities
 Green belt is the zone for organic farming ,
diaries , orchards and forests

 In 1984 Doshi was invited to work out a plan to
deal with the overflow of people in Jaipur .
 Vidhyadhar Bhattacharya was the chief
architect and city planner of Jaipur who was
appointed by Sawai Jai Singh II after who the
city was named
 The primary geometry was deformation of
nine squares.
 The site was north west of the old city
 Doshi decided to orientate the plan so as to
accommodate the wind and cut down the
western exposure to the afternoon sun.
 The north was a parched slope for which the
water guided down into channels feeding
greenery throughout the city.

pakistan so Punjab required a new capital.
 Punjab government and the PM approached Le Corbusier for
the city planning of chandigarh
 Chandigarh has thirty sectors in and roads are classified into
seven types
 The city of chandigarh is planned to a human scale
 Head - capitol
 Heart – the city center
 Stomach – the commercial area
 Arms – university and industrial zone
 Lungs – leisure valley and open spaces
 Arteries – network of roads

 Sawai Jai Singh II of Kanchchwala dynasty established the city of Jaipur by
appointing Vidhyadhar Bhattacharyar as the chief architect .
 Due to restricted expansion in amber , the previous capital , he shifted the
capital to Jaipur which has adequate drinking water and good drainage
system and its rugged hills also ensured a constant supply of building
material
 Unlike the previous capitals which were on the hill top , Jaipur city was built
at the base of the hills
 It is the first planned city in India based on the hindu system of town
planning and followed the principles in the Shilpa Shastra , an ancient
Indian treatise on architecture
 The city was divided into nine blocks in which two blocks are palace
 The city was painted pink as it is the ancient color of hospitality to welcome
king Eduard VII
 The city has public spaces such as Chaupars , Bazaars , Mohallas , streets
and temples

Gandhinagar, Gujarat
 When Bombay was divided into Gujarat and Maharashtra Gujarat required
a new capital.
 As mahatma Gandhi was born in Gujarat Gandhinagar was named after
him . Many statues were also erected as a tribute to him .
 Ahmedabad was first chosen as the capital . But it was proposed that new
capital must be built alongside other new apitals mainly Chandigarh
 H.K. Mewada and Prakash .M. Apte designed the capital.
 the city had been built taking inspiration form Chandigarh and
Bhubaneshwar and planned in Grid Iron Method
 It is highly structured city and has odered street grid pattern
 It is divided into work area , city center, shopping commercial and
warehousing area, residential area, recreation area and sports center
