Brief description of the lesson Students will participate in a read along. After discussing what empathy is, students will
complete a story retelling rope.

Why is there a need for this lesson?


Rationale To support students and their thinking skills, inquiry and build empathy and understanding of
different cultures.
Keep in mind appropriate length of an activity for preschool-aged children is 20 mins at
most, no more than 45 mins for children K-2 grade)
45 minutes total
2 minutes- Introducing the story, asking students if they know what empathy is.
3 minutes- discussing what empathy is for those who do not know
Timeframe
15-20 minutes- read loud, stopping to answer questions
8-10 minutes- discussing setting, characters, conflicts, events, and the solution
8-10 minutes- create the storytelling rope
2-5 minutes- students showcasing

Ask students if they know what empathy is, and if so give an example. If student’s are unclear of
what empathy is, we will introduce it and give a brief intro of the story.

As a class, share what we believe the elements of the storytelling rope are. Students will then
create the story telling rope and write the elements of each on their worksheet.

Students will share their storytelling rope and discuss an element of the story.
