A2 Practice

It is important that the author chose to show “man vs. self” by conflict in this way

because the metaphor used clearly shows Montag’s inner conflict with himself and

how he is torn between the person he used to be and his responsibility to society.

When Bradburry uses a metaphor to explain Montag’s feelings, the reader has a

further understanding of what he must feel like. Another thing that is important

about the choice made by the author is that he compares Montag’s conflict with

himself and “dividing his body” into two parts. The author is trying to put the

reader’s into Montag’s shoes; since the readers can’t live the hard decision Montag

had to make, they can imagine it in a better way by imagining their body “dividing

in two.”
