CHAPTER 1:
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Mobile phones are one of the digital

revolutions that we are all familiar with. Although, the first mobile phones were not

really mobile phones at all since they were a two-way radio that allowed people,
such

as emergency services, communicate. The first digital mobile phone that was
created

was the “Motorola International 3200” on April 3 rd of the year 1973.

Since one of the offers of digital mobile phones is

entertainment, mobile games were introduced as an entertainment part in mobile

phones. Games before are quite easy like Tetris and Snake games. Many years
after,

multiple mobile games have been invented and developed that are more
complicated

as mobile phones and technology evolved. Some examples of mobile games that
are

popular nowadays are Mobile Legends, Call of Duty, and League of Legends.

Even the researchers are one of the many players of this mobile games.
These

4|Page
mobile games are popular among the teens of generation Z. Most of the students in

Systems Plus Computer College are either players themselves or familiar with these

types of games. As researchers, we aim to know how many students are playing

mobile games and what is the ratio of students who are players, familiar, or do not

play games at all.

According to Villareal, J., (2020), there are positive effects brought by mobile

gaming. It helps to relax the mind and lifts moods. Since most students are stressed

with school works, some relieves their stress by playing mobile games. Some games

also help to sharpen brains by thinking of strategies and increases problem solving.

Lastly, he also said that mobile gaming brings people together. Playing games help

people to bond and to be social with different interactions through games.

According to “The Negative Effects of Mobile Gaming” of Davis, C., (2017),

there are numerous of negative effects by playing mobile games such as Dangerous

Distractions, Loss of Productivity, Sleep problems, and so much more. These effects

are alarming and may continue to affect more people as time goes by. The

researchers, who are also players of these popular mobile games, have experienced

some of the effects mentioned.

By the sources and facts that are stated above, the researchers are more

intrigued on what are the possible effects the students of SPCC

5|Page
experience. The researchers will seek on how does these effects, affect their

academic performance in Systems Plus Computer College.

This is mainly for the purpose of students who are academically being affected

by mobile gaming to be aware of these effects and know the preventative measures

to do to discipline themselves and help them achieve their academic excellence.

CHAPTER 2:
REVIEWS OF RELATED LITERATURE & STUDIES

FOREIGN STUDIES

People, particularly students, are affected by both positive and harmful

aspects

of online games. Most individuals today associate online games with poor academic

performance. Various research has produced various outcomes over the years.
Some

of them claim to be connected, while others claim they are not.

According to Anderson and Dill, (2000), there is a negative association

between

the two. Thus, there is no correlation between a player's number of hours played

and their academic grades.

9|Page
According to Marcus Palaus, the first author of the review that mention the

"games have sometimes been praised or demonized often without real data backing

up those claims. The parents letting their children play games freely which there is
no

doubt, in a serious problem. There may be an effect to the child's brain when they
still

play games in mobile apps.

Another research that is according to Hitch and Duncan (2005), students will

sometimes defend their games by claiming that they are learning something from

them. A report published by EDUCAUSE supports these students' claims,

recommending that staff learn and understand these games in order to assist
students.

FOREIGN LITERATURE

This generation is more inclined to digital objects and most are more
interested

in mobile games rather physical or cultural games how children back in the day do.

Even without research, you will easily be familiar with the effects of these modern

games through observing and analyzing this generation’s behavior.

According to Zainab Saed, “5 Adverse Effects of Mobile Games on Child’s

Brain”, Apps, News. Most games contain violent stuff that influences a child’s brain
to

be violent or be aggressive with such thoughts in mind. Studies have also shown that

10 | P a g e
mobile games destroy the attention span of students, leading them to have poorer

academic performance. In addition, it was also found that student’s concentration is

affected by mobile games. It says that it increases ability for short bursts
concentration

but damages the long-term concentration. It can also lead to intense symptoms of

Inattentive ADHD or learning and attention disorder. And also, they can be short-

tempered and impulsive

Another article that is written by Chris Davis-Falco (2017), “The Negative

effects of Mobile Games” says that as the platform of mobile games becomes more

popular, researchers noticed the possible conflicts and harmful behaviors. Some of

these are such as Dangerous distractions where a player is performing an important

activity such as driving. A player may be tempted to check notifications from a game

leading them to lose focus at driving which is a risky situation. Another effect is
losing

productivity wherein a player chooses to play a game instead of working on

something
important such as their academic studies or work. Mobile games can also lead to
sleep

deprivation that affects the health of children and their academic performance.

There are negative effects of mobile gaming to children however there is also

positives effects that benefit the children. According to The CSR Journal (2021), “5

Effects of Mobile Gaming You Probably Didn’t Know”, playing mobile games affects

your mental health positively. You improve your cognitive skills by thinking of smart

11 | P a g e
solutions or strategies to a challenge or game. It keeps your mind busy and fight

depression. Instead of overthinking and stressing out, relieve your stress through

gaming and forget about your problem once in a while to let your mental health rest.

LOCAL STUDIES

Playing mobile games are popular among Filipino children nowadays. Most

children, specifically teens, have a mobile gaming app and plays mobile games.

Studies regarding students mobile gaming occurs, as researchers want to know the

relation and its effect to the academic performance of the students

According to Dumrique and Castillo (2017), “Online Gaming: Impact on the

Academic Performance and Social Behavior of Students in Polytechnic University of

the Philippines Laboratory High School”, Study reveals that boys are inclined to

these games compared to girls. It states that even they play mobile games, they

socialize well and excel in their academic performance. However, it’s impossible to

not play even a half an hour to a game they’re interested in. Thus, it is a matter of

discipline.

Another study states the effect of mobile gaming to academic performance is

written by Rommel L. Verecio (2018), “Online Gaming Addiction among BSIT

Students

of Leyte Normal University Philippines its Implication towards Academic

Performance”. The study says that parents frowned despite the positive effects of

mobile games because of the potential of overuse of this technology which leads to

addiction by students. Study shows that 29.61% of students expressed that they

12 | P a g e
experience adverse effects of playing mobile games such as they cannot focus on

their academic studies.

According to Garcia, Jarabe, and Paragas (2018), “Negative Effects of Online

Games on Academic Performance”, Pangasinan State University, the paper shows

that students admit that their academic performance was affected by online gaming.

They stated that the adverse effects might not be severe, these effects were still had

to be addressed. The potential of the negative effects to their academics may still

increase or worsen when it is not held with preventions and interventions.

LOCAL LITERATURE

According to Magna Kultura (2012), ―Filipino children nowadays spend their

childhood playtime on Internet cafes or with their handheld game consoles rather
than

socializing with other children playing the normal street games that for years could
be

a culture and a norm for a typical Filipino child. during this generation, mobile

applications are more useful and convenient to use instead of old things utilized by
the

old generations. rather like the calculator, clock, and camera etc. many developers

create a mobile application about this stuff to create life easier or to possess
complete

things in one mobile gadget information. Mobile applications are easier to than the

standard Filipino games. Traditional Filipino games are played manually within the

streets. And mobile games are intended to for cellphones, for instance cellphones.

through gaming. They also finish their sleep and school works first and obey to do

household chores as their mother says. Thus, being considered as responsible

players. It is also stated in the article that there is also monetary benefit in mobile

gaming such as streaming or joining and winning tournaments. In addition, Pinggolio

says that there is nothing wrong with playing mobile games as long as you manage

your time right but if it affects the different aspects of life such as self-care, school or

works, and even with the connection between they player and their loved ones, then

it has become problematic.
